Jayco Journey DX wheel size.

Hi all... We recently bought a used Jayco Journey, (2020) tandem axle. It has 14" mags with no name Chinese tyres. I want to add either A/T or L/T tyres, plus some height / ground clearance. It has had the Axle repositioned to be under the springs so I've gained 40mm but a little more would be great. Tyre dealers say by law they can't go any bigger than 15mm over std. 15mm would be pointless. Has anyone here added 1" - 2" (25 - 50 mm). I have a set of 15" mags that would slip straight on. There's plenty of room. 205 - 225 x 70 x 15" would be ideal. Cheers DR.

Hi Dusty,

On our last van I fitted the rims off a Nissan Patrol....with -12 offset. The tyres were 235/75/ R15....the same as a Jayco outback...in extra loads rating (not Light Truck...too bloody rough ). This gave me about a 35 mil lift...which turned out to be just right as it levelled eveything up nicely.

I have done the same thing to our current van...except I fitted them to the Jayco rims. Works well.

Cheers  Keith

Beware.
A larger wheel diameter will have an adverse impact on the braking performance.

Cheers Kieth and Wotsesaid. Exactly what I need Kieth, what tyres did you use. Wotsesaid, Yes I know. She locks them up if I don't have it adjusted right. Will be ok.

Most trailer manufacturers can authorise any engineering modifications required.
Change whatever you like provided it stays safe and you get it approved.
My son recently modified a single axle Jayco Expanda to a 3T axle, 12" brakes, after market Hilux rear springs and 17" wheels and tyres.
Got a significant ATM increase and it is a totally different van on bad roads. He is currently on the Gibb River Road.
Cheers,
Peter

I think the "law" the tyre dealers are referring to relates to "motor vehicles", not caravans / trailers...

Sorry for not getting back before now Dusty.

I fitted HIFLY AT 601 XL to the van in 235/75/R15..which are standard size on Jayco 17 foot Journey  Outback....as have used them on my bush bashing Hilux....and they are wearing well on van ...altho I dont run them any higher that 32 psi for a more comfortable ride.

Cheers Keith.

Now thats a good one hey. Do not know for sure....but from memory I think it is the same as Nissan Patrol and Toyota Landcruiser from about the early noughties vintage.....but tis only a guess.

I guess that gives me something to check out next time I have the nuts undone on My 2021 Pajero too hey.

Cheers  Keith

Dusty,
Can you remove a nut off a wheel and take it to your nearest hardware store or automotive store? Those type of stores near my place have thread checkers/testers for checking nuts and bolts.
