My Yahwee (Yowie)Story Part 1

This incident happened in April of 2022. It happened, at Copeton Dam, at a paid camping area next to the dam, in the New England of NSW. The camping area was newly refurbished, with brand new facilities, that everybody that uses it rates  at 5 star.
I went camping there for 7 days, with the final day being a Monday. My campertrailer is a 1980 Hardfloor Campomatic, with as new 26 oz Duck canvas walls, which will become relevant later in the story. I was camping there with my Jack Russell dog named Milo. It was quite warm during the days, but quite cool at night. I was staying in the drive through powered sites. The toilets are located south of the camp area approx. 60 metres away. Their is lighting but   it is not  bright.

So the day before was a Sunday, and people were coming out during the day, for bbqing using the supplied bbqs, fishing or bushwalking. Now the caretaker has a few rules, and one is to clean the bbq's after use, most of the people would do this, with the occasional one or two entitled not doing so, thus bringing in wildlife at night.   On  Sunday night, the last night,  I was in the tent, watching movies and reading camping magazines, which is mostly what I/we  would normally do, with the fan heater on, if it is cool, and just generally relaxing. Every now and then I would either go to the toilets, for myself, or bring Milo out on a lead for his needs. As I usually have late nights at home, this doesn't change when camping, so finished the night at 11.30pm, turned the fan heater down low, and got into bed with Milo.

At about 2am, I needed to go to the toilet, got my hand torch, and put Milo on his lead, went to the door flap, unzipped and went out the door, turned around with the torch light pointing to the north and also at a bbq approx 35 metres away, and I heard a noise, a pretty loud and hard "boong", looked over towards the noise, and saw, a big black shape, it had hit it's head on a steel pole next the  bbq, it stood   almost 8 feet tall, its stumpy head bowing down under the eaves of the shelter . Now not only did I have torch light on it, but right next to the bbq, was an overhead street light. What I saw I did not comprehend it, but anyhow, the thing was startled, was looking over our way, then moved at lightning fast speed, on all fours, having to jump the rails next to the bbq, heading straight for us, luckily, I had not zipped up the door, got inside quick dragging Milo behind me, and very quickly doing up the zip. I then stood in front of the bed, not realising that the torch was now pointing at the bed head.

The thing, which I was putting 2 and 2 together I thought was a real "yowie" hit the front of my camper storage box, so hard it knocked me off my feet onto the bed, with my head hitting right up at the pillow end, and right next to the canvas rear wall.  This thing was snorting and sniffing, right at the canvass, the top of my head was only 4 inches from the canvas wall and it's nose, I then realised I still had the torch light on, thus turning it off quickly. Being a 750 lumen led torch must have shown through the canvas,  which must have annoyed it. My dog by this time, was also on the bed, but remaining very quiet.

The heater has a red light, on it, thus giving me some low lighting in the camper, so I could just see Milo's face, he was intently watching the canvas wall where this thing was, it then moved around the right side of the camper, to about half way along it, and Milo was watching where it was going, in the mean time, my neighbour who was located about 6 feet east of me on an upper level, of about 1metre of height, was woken by the noise got up out of bed and was shining his torch out the window, what he saw scared the crap out of him, he told me the next morning, the thing was higher then his Jayco pop up camper, it had red eyes, it's head was attached to it's upper body, with no neck, it had black wavy hair all over it's body, with a lightly haired face, and 4  canine teeth exposed on the      side of it's mouth. He said it was looking straight at him, he quickly turned off the light and just collapsed to the bed, in fear. Then he said it turned and moved further along the side of my camper, and kept walking around my camper. I was in the camper petrified, watching the dog's head following it around our camper. Occasionally it would push in on the camper wall  quite hard, but not doing damage, which  was due to the heavy canvas. It also kept on snorting and sniffing the tent.

I was busting to go to the toilet, so was Milo, after about 2 hours of it still roaming around, and us still  busting, I quietly got out of bed, got an empty drink bottle and used it to do my business, I also got Milo, down and enticed him to use a pee mat, that we would put out overnight for the dogs when camping. At home they have a doggy door, so can go out all night, but in the camper, that is not available. We then very quietly got back into bed, and eventually got to sleep.

I was awoken by banging noise at about 6.45am, coming from my neighbour, so I got up, put the dog on  a lead, then went out to the guy, to see what he was up to. He was packing up, and as he had arrived only the day before intending to stay a week, he said he was leaving. I asked is that to do what happened last night, he said yes, their was no way, he would stay here, and he was heading back to SA, straight today, and never will be wild camping  again. I said but you've paid for a week, he said that doesn't matter, he's going.  And I am never camping in similar settings like this again.

At about 8.30 am my wife arrived to pick me, Milo, and the camper up to go  back home, I told her what I went thru, and she didn't believe me, she said it must have been a deer. What I saw was no bloody deer. What the dog and I saw really scared us, and I haven't been back there since. I am an ex-soldier, paranormasl things just don't scare me, but this thing scared me to death. I hope I never see one again.

                                                                                              End of Part 1.

Large black shape, loud hard boong - a yowie is not what comes to mind.

I look forward to subsequent parts.

Dean Harrison has spent the last 25 years researching this phenomena. I heard an interview with him on the ABC last year. Look at his web page and perhaps you might like to contact him. Given the number of sightings by credible witnesses, something is certainly out there.

We here all these stories, and I'm not just referring to Yahwee stories, but what surprises me is no one ever comes up with any hard evidence. like the remains of one. Shot, run over, or maybe just passed away by natural causes. Good story BC.

Even though I wished I was armed at the time, I am not sure if I would have shot it, another living thing to kill today is not what I am about. Although I lived off the land back as a teenager for 18 months, I am a different me today, and killing is not in me anymore. Also I see these beings as something unique and they should be preserved. Even if I personally found out where their exact  habitat was, or I had camera footage, I wouldn't make that public, the sooner they are found out publicaly, the sooner they become extinct. I don't believe this one's habitat is where it was at the time, and going by what the local elder told me, I can have a pretty good guess as to where they mainly live in the north of NSW. What was strange leading up to this incident, was we were going out to this camping area almost every  month, and their was plenty of wildlife around at the time, like lot's of deer, roo's pigs etc, but the last 2 months we went out there was nothing about at all, so I gather after this Yahwee moved in, it either hunted the numbers down, or the wildlife moved on quickly.  . But I have been told  the wildlife is back. The elder told me that the yahwees come to this area every 2-4 years when wildlife is in abundance.

Not suggesting for one minute you should have shot it BC and as I said I'm not just referring just to your Yahwee story, but that doesn't mean that somebody else in your situation and was feeling menaced by one, or just looking for notoriety wouldn't. You would think somewhere along the line somebody would turn up some indisputable evidence to support one of these stories Be it Yahwee, Black Panther or other. They seem well adapt at avoiding game camera's, motor vehicles, Hunters, and even die without leaving a trace they ever existed.

Have a look at Skinwalker Ranch and what has been found and recorded there Landy. Ask yourself why a billionaire and the US military and CIA have invested so much time and money into what has been recorded there. Have a look at sightings in Montana, Canada and Alaska. Then have a look at NSW. Something is there.

Will try and post a link above. Does anyone remember the house security cam of a couple who live in Lancelin (WA) who caught a large black Panther on their property in broad daylight? story featured on ABC news a couple of years back. If this link does not work can somebody post the link please.

I have always felt "ät home" in NSW and never worried too much about being outside at night.

But QLD, now thats another matter. Nothing would get me out of my van after dark. Always had uncomfortable feelings about was out there. Never had any reason to think like that, but..

Its seems that NSW has more of these sitings than QLD though. So what would I know.

Enjoyed your account BC. Please tell us the rest and any outcomes you may know.

Their is a couple more parts, more so quantifying some aspects around this incident, and about "The Twist", I mentioned which is another story not related to this incident, but happened here at home ( I live on the very edge of a pretty small village, where their is forest right up to our home) because I did something stupid, not thinking how intelligent these yahwee's are. It was such a profound learning experience that I now know not to do anything like that again. I will be submitting these next two parts over the next two weeks.

Since your Yowie post BC I have been doing some reading on the subject. There are numerous accounts of sightings but I could not find a clear picture, the ones I saw were, to say the least, very grainy and from some distance. Many observations credit aboriginal folklore as being the origins, some putting it in the same category as the the Yeti and Sasquatch.

By what you write though, the experience was very real to you, making me reluctant to discount your story as fiction. 'Tis my opinion that the jury is still out on this one until someone can come up with some irrefutable evidence. There are many instances of supernatural events that have occurred around the world which are still unexplained.

I await your next instalment.

If someone can convert the link I left above to clickable you will see good footage of a black panther in broad daylight. Proves that if a black panther is out there it makes other things more believable.
