I have not been over the route on Google Maps and have not found any gravel sections You can survey the route by using Google Maps Street View - here is an example of what you see. Just keep clicking along the route, particularly at points that may be a little dodgy, and look up and down the road with Street View.

It has been near 25 years since we used those roads on our 4wding adventures, the Plains Road was a mixture of unsealed and 1 lane sealed sections and looking at your link it appears it has not changed much.
Coming out of Brisbane with the club members following we had it worked out, we had so good back in the mid nineties we able to get to Dorrigo mostly on unsealed roads and then return via an alternative using more unsealed roads.
