For whatever reason the portable air conditioners sold in Australia only have an exhaust duct.
Intake air to feed the exhaust is pinched from the room, so that air in the room has to be replaced by outside air.
It is simple to knock up a bit of ducting out of cardboard & sticky tape, string, Velcro or scraps to make ducting to feed the intake directly from the outside air.
A split system is far better, but a bit of bush carpentry will help a lot to improve the performance of a portable.
Also have another one which is built into the ceiling so it is more like ducted air conditioning. Has been in use for almost 2 decades. It's a reverse cycle air conditioner so I built in a permanent drain otherwise it would stop when full of water when heating.

Yesterday had this pretty horrible humid day. The modified air conditioners worked well. Ok, cost a bit to run (2 of them) as compared to split systems, but it's only short term. Still cheaper than a cappuccino. Our home brewed coffee tastes better anyway!

My Peugeot 504, my first car, a Peugeot/Renault, 'Track Yellow' colour (great colour with hindsight)* which I fitted with after market air conditioning.
My Grandfather also had a 504 in a pale metallic green (which was probably my inspiration to get a nice first car & not a ****ty Holden. All my friends couldn't believe how luxurious the Peugeot was. But they wanted a 6 cylinder engine (2 extra cylinders was their priority over luxury!)). In other words 'brain dead'. I will be clear on issues of brain dead people.
Then to improve on my Grandfather car which also had louvres on the rear window. He also had personalised number prates HCxxx (his initials), on that issue I couldn't be bothered. I have got off the shelf number plates# (# another interesting story before NSW could exchange numbers plates which I will post).
The reason I added air conditioning was my grandmother would constantly wipe the passenger window with the back of her left hand. Her very large carot diamond ring which had left sweeping curves in the window (hideous diamond ring which my sister had has resigned).
Back to air conditioning... Could cryogenically freeze all occupants of the car including kidnapped person in the boot!
It also cooled the 6 tinnie custom fridge very efficiently (with back up cooling... not very efficient due to high energy consumption. A Peltier device in its day as I couldn't build (didn't have the skills) a custom compressor fridge in tight location).
My Seat Ibiza air conditioning was seriously good, but I did briefly turn it off at taking off at traffic lights as it was a serious anchor on a 44kW engine. Other than that I left it on all the time.
The Land Rover air conditioning is ok, but a 4 decades old air conditioning would freeze the nuts off a brass monkey. So something is not working with today's technology.
# Track Yellow colour hid all dirt. The French understood Australia colour design better than locals!
