Self Service Supermarkets and other Retailers

As a follow-on to Aussie Paul's post re Self-Service Retail outlets using us to do the work of sacked checkout staff.

You know what? Seeing how those of us who want to use the self-service checkout system, I was just wondering if you will get the invitation to the store's Christmas party this year.

Check your mailbox for your invitation.

And of course, have you noticed how the prices have been reduced due to the $$$ saved by replacing checkout staff,.

No neither have I.

Sign of the changes ahead due to automation.

That was my job some 60 odd years ago in a Queensland outback town. Plus I received the huge salary of 3 pounds a week.

In todays $$$ terms it equates to $6 less tax.or the price of a large cup of coffee.

How did I survive on that amount. Plus I paid my parents $2 board and had a great time with the rest. How times have changed.

Hoswever we are enjoying today with all the modern lifestyle at our fingerftips.

It looks like a supermarket chain in England, is scrapping self service checkouts

I asked a family member, who works in an Australian supermarket, if they were thinking of scrapping their self service checkouts

She replied that, if they do, it will be a long time in the future, as they have invested a lot of money, on setting up, self service checkouts

I do not use supermarket self service checkouts, as I believe they are doing people out of jobs

What I don't understand is the people who choose take do a very large and very full shopping trolley (or even multiple trolleys) through the self service.  Seems to be defeating the purpose of even having them.

Stand back and observe what the people want, people are voting with their feet, there is a vast majority of shoppers who prefer to use self serve checkouts, whats the ratio 10, 20 30 :1

Sure a lot of older shoppers want assisted checkouts, they are there but a reduced number, you talk about jobs being lost your very wrong many have been redeployed to other areas like picking and packing for click and collect or home delivery customers.
