 Todays "Sport" utes are just fashionable "toys". In 1960's we had vehicles such as the MG B to fill the same gap. 

Once you have a need to tow anything over 2 tonne you have to "do the true figures", you need a work horse ...something with true strength and endurance - not just "looks and claims".

Once you expect to tow something over 3 tonne the field is very limited, especially if cost over the life of the vehicle is taken into account (not just fuel economy, but depreciation, repairs incl. down time and useful life of the vehicle - is it 100,000Km, 200,000 Km or 800,000 Km ?)

That is the reason many caravanners are now considering using "light trucks" (Isuzu,Hino etc) to do the job safely and economically.

You have to "get real" about the situation .......the trucking industry do not use toys when towing 20 to 130 tonne.

 Great to see that at least you now are agreeing with what I've been saying for years.

At least the Hilux has a decent wheelbase, unlike some of the stupid little "SUVs" that weigh 10kg? but have a 3500kg tow capacity.

The sooner that cars under 4500kg GVM have the same towing laws applied to them as do vehicles over 4500kg the better it will be for all motorists. Cheers

At least the Hilux has a decent wheelbase, unlike some of the stupid little "SUVs" that weigh 10kg? but have a 3500kg tow capacity.

 Yes Yobarr I have to agree, Toyota is not all that cracked up to what some are saying... but I think KJB has it all in perspective.

 Agree totally, Kerry. Of late, on my travels here in WA, I have noticed many "light trucks" towing vans, with the Nissan 300 (I think that's its name!) joining the little Hinos and Isuzus in the big adventure! And these little trucks seem to get along OK on the open road too, with the drivers who have never driven anything bigger than a Corolla now no doubt feeling that they're mixing-it with the Big Boys in our 160-200 ton Roadtrains! Cheers

 Yes, unfortunately it seems that Toyota has seen fit to jump on the bandwagon with all the other little twin-cab dreamers' wagons that have zero chance of safely towing 3500kg as a PIG trailer. Shouldn't be allowed.

The only Toyotas that can safely tow 3500kg as a PIG trailer (caravan) are the 70 series.

The 79 series comes in both single-cab and twin-cab variants, while the 78 is the venerable Troopy, which would suit only a couple.  

There is a  station wagon model, the VDJ 76, but its short wheelbase and low GCM means that I certainly wouldn't be looking at towing 3500kg as a PIG trailer. 

However, the waiting list for 70 series cars is literally years, which is why newish models are selling for upwards of $30k more than new price! 

But at least you get what you pay for. Cheers
