P.S Make sure that you get an aerial that is appropriate for your intended usage patterns.

P.S Have a couple of 5 watt GME handhelds, but not used yet!

Welcome to the Forum Ian. Radio not my forte' - I use Uniden base station and GME handhelds - Works with sufficient range for needs.

I have a very good Oricom unit which has proven to be very reliable and pretty good range. Australian company too if that matters to you. Bought a kit which included the aerial. Price was pretty reasonable too.

Everyone I know who has a 5Watt fixed UHF unit in their vehicle is happy with their purchase. I am happy with my $129.00 Oricom. A decent antenna helps. Also, I have a 5Watt hand held no brand that I use in the caravan. If you want heaps of options and accessories you will pay much more. Standard features seems to satisfy most users.

Icom - Japanese built quality & ruggedness. Used extensively on outback stations where thy are an everyday tool. Cost a little more than most but worth every cent if you want lifetime quality. In car & handheld. Once you have owned & used one you wont choose anything else.

When l upgraded from my old 40 UHF l brought a GME because it fit perfectly into a space in my dash. It has served me well for 8 years now.
