Most days when I do my email (2-accounts) + news sites (3 sometimes 4) sites + forums (3 sometimes 5) sites, it totals it all up to from 35Mb to 45Mb of download
Imagine my surprise recently to see 988Mb on one occasion, 935Mb on another, 340Mb on another date .... what the hell is Windows up to?
This Acer laptop that I am using was bought 2-months ago and its first few weeks of operation took 'about 45-seconds' to reach the desktop image and loaded icons. Today it took 80 seconds before it settled. Again what the hell's going on?

Pressing the Windows key for the menu - gets an 8-second response time Doing a Ctrl-S to save a notepad entry took 14-seconds for the Save screen to arrive Opening up a spreadsheet that used to be 'quick' now takes well over 30-seconds
Obviously you have processes running in the background.
I would take that laptop back to the store and before demanding, politely ask if that behaviour was normal for that laptop model and ask them to fix it or replace it.
I can't offer any advice on windows computers as I have not had a windows machine since 1995.
I'm continually fighting with my tech. At the moment it's the printer. It's insisting I need to load paper, when the tray is already chockers. I apparently filled the tray without turning it off first and that upset it. Disconnecting the power and restarting did nothing. I had to reset the whole thing as if I had just unboxed it.
At least it's not demanding that I purchase cartridges from HP.
HP turn off their printers if people try to use substitute cartridges instead of the HP ones that you must purchase from them on contract with regular deliveries. That might be OK for business but not for the irregular use of home users.
What about the fridge, microwave dishwasher and even the coffee machine and their music etc. that is annoying and can't be stopped. We should be able to decide if we want the reminder or not.
How many of them report back to their makers? HP Printers certainly, and what else. I suspect anything with a remote monitoring app might. That includes my Air purifier and my battery system in the van.
As for anticipating what we write.... I find I type what I want to say, and it gets overridden so I'm continually going back and correcting it.
I love all the new gadgets that make life easier, but these dogmatic AIs need to be able to be turned off when they become a hindrance. These gadgets should assist not hinder and work the way we tell them to.
The designers of tech need to remember that tech is a servant, and it has to do what we want not what it wants.
Although you have to be careful there. as I think about Isaac Asimov's stories about robots and their literal programming and how it can go dramatically wrong.

In today modern age it's cheaper to buy a new printer than buy new cartrides, replacements for my Deskjet $57, New printer $39.
The biggest issue with HP deskjet printers, the printhead is on the cartridge which lends itself to fouling when refilling with aftermarket ink, you can still buy replacement cartridges from places like Officeworks, remember when buying a new printer the ink cartridge is a small cacacity compared to the replacements.

Updates have been comming thick and fast for both Win 10 & 11, the release of Win 12 is not far away. If your happy the setup up with your Win 10 device, I would suggest that many of these updates just bloat the size of windows. I'm at the position where 1 laptop has updates blocked and had many programs removed during the debloating the machine, the 2nd is still receiving updates but cannot update without my approval, if its about a security update I just delete it.
An example I ran my windows 7 laptop with the no updates after the origional install, IMHO stay clear of cloud services, one drive, if you want to store something off computer the use an external device like a usb hard drive or stick.
They are basically a mob with a lot of power, legalized scum.
They employ mob tactics and can quite literally do anything they want, no point in reading their terms and cond, it would basically say 'we have the right to do anything to your machine's
There is an arms race that's been going on, the modders come up with some tools to disable their toxic evil, then MS just work around it, the modders can't win, they can't possible stand a chance against such a large skillful mob with unlimited resources. So as time goes on more and more things are being restricted in windows and it's getting more and more invasive, the user owns nothing. Just recently after a few years of running a heavily de-bloated seemingly stable win10 machine, MS activated another one of their nasty gotchas ,out of the blue I get some evil invasive message forcing me to " let's finish your install ", complete utter time wasting privacy invading garbage that serves no use but to antagonize the user. Windows 11 for me official marks the death of windows. I WILL NOT put up with their insidious games.
What I do on my win10 machine is run a few apps like O&O shut up and disable updates and defender. Clone my operating system with macrium reflect so I can undo any potential invasive sick acts. I just use CCleaner to clear my history and not stupid enough to waste a dollar on anti virus software. So far my win10 machine is as silent as a mule and runs butter smooth. You can't technically stop the telemetry spying BS 100%, there is always something they are doing. But it's pretty close to win vista/ 7.
BTW, updates are the biggest conjob of them all, they do nothing practical, you need no security in today's day n age, you are a rodent on a spinning wheel....everything you do online you generate revenue for some evil corporate pigs, so they wan't you and your system healthy to milk you day in and day out. Viruses and malware just isnt a threat in today's age. I haven't used any security since late 2000s and my operating systems have been never infected with anything but cookie trackers.
