Cost of hamburger

$16.50 with the lot in a semi industrial/commercial takeaway shop.

I can't complain with the ingredients, on par with any other hamburger with the lot, but price wise I thought onions were eye-watering!

Think I paid a similar price recently when the missus and I decided to try the new takeaway that started up around the corner form us.  2 burgers + chips cost the best part of $40.  No longer a cheap option for those nights when you just can't be bothered to cook anything.

A " Family Pie ", now is $16 at our local baker at Lavington, $14.50 at baker in Thurgoona. Might be equal to 3 ordinary pies

Many if not most, local take-aways buy their supplies at Coles/Woolies, just like the rest of us. They claim only 1%, or 2%, price increase but I'm paying approximately 25%, 30% more than 12 months ago for similar shop.

Not hamburgers, pies at Fresh and Save, $3.99. Best pies in town. Best weve tasted since the roadhouse in Normanton.

Nearby is a cafe/restaurant. Made the mistake of advertising their menu on F/B.
$20 for an omelette. $2.00 worst case ingredients cost, owner operator so no
cost paying a chef, rental is minimal because of location. Really? Clinger as I
pointed out to this clown is people are stupid to go and pay that. Cost of living?
Give me a break.
In the village where we live prior to moving to where we are was a club house
with a fully equipped commercial kitchen. Management advertised for a cook.
This seriously intellectually challenged person applied and got the job. Actually
I think she was the only applicant. Shortly thereafter she was complaining that
there was no money to be made. I offered my help and looked into it. She was
buying her supplies from Coles & Woolies. You cannot pay retail for goods you
are going to on sale. Using a supplier like PFD or similar was beyond comprehension.
Resulted in closing down not long after.

Aldi in Manly closed down last year in September because the owner of the site put the rent up too much. The premises are still empty. Probably now going to the two Coles stores, no Woolworths in Manly.

Anyway. We would often see people from takeaways & restaurants in their uniforms getting cart fulls of goods, often frozen vegetables by the 3 or 4 dozen packets at a time.

$8.00 for a sausage roll at a Bakery in Albany last week, wasn't that good either.

Couldn't afford the bottled water or the can of coke.

Often just by pie's and sausage roles from the the supermarket and heat them on the engine as we travel, works great.

Gee, that comment brings back memories!

Waaay back, when I used to do long hours in freezing weather planting wheat I used to tie tins of baked beans to the upright exhausts on the big Steiger tractor.

Made a nice hot snack any time. Cheers

About half a lifetime ago my wife and I owned a corner store/takeway, we had a small section of the shop, as a what mum forgot shop a few staples tea and coffee etc, which because of the small volume sold came from Coles and Woolies, everything else came from PFD, Tim & Terry's and other wholesalers.

A couple a dozen pies pasties and sausage rolls along with hamburger rolls came from our local baker, meat from a local butcher. Coke from the local coke rep until one day his area manager came in and demanded 70% of all my, and I stress my Fridge doors for coke products all to get a 5% discount on invoice, after a few discriptive adjectives he was invited to FO and to make shore the door didnt hit in the back of his head on the way out. I then brought only 3, 2, 1.25l and cans from the supermarkes in town when on special 50% cheaper than I could by from the coke distributor.

In reality in some cases its cheaper to buy from supermarkets.

Bought a Vietnamese pork roll for lunch today (Bahn Mi) from a local baker $8.50, delicious.

Cut in half any amount 2 people for lunch.

There are alternatives to overpriced burgers and pies.wink0

I always ask for a hamburger without sauce & it tasted better. So other than a possible bit of residue on the hotplate from previous order, there is not much other than basic ingredients. Maybe a bit of mince beef extender.

Must be showing my age as I can remember when Hamburger with the lot cost 50 cents.

At that same time, a jug of beer also cost 50 cents. Cheers

Balingup WA gourmet pies are 9 dollars. And then at the Dardanup Bakery fully loaded chilli pie is 8 bucks. Very nice and worth every cent.

We had a takeaway shop and made hamburgers. Patties were weight at 160gm each simply for the sake

of each being exactly the same. We also weight the chips, again for the same reason. Simple calculation

as to what each patty costs. All up should be about $2.00 to $2.50. Rule of thumb in commercial kitchens

1/3 is your food costs. $2.00 x 3 = $6.00. Anything above that indicates you are greedy or do not know

how to purchase and or manage your business. Assumed $10kg of mince.

Over time I have witnessed too many food outlet who do not follow the simple edict: A little bit of something

is better then a lot of nothing. When dealing with a perishable product, greed leads to loss of goods which

in turn lead to loss of income. Why do you think asians do so well. Move a lot of product and make small

profit. At the end they are still there.

Paid $17 for the VR burger with the works at the Victoria River Roadhouse between Kathryne and Timber Creek last week and it came with a hasbrown. When they they asked me if I wanted a hasbrown or chilli chips with it I thought it would come on the side not on it. Was also surprised when we went through Tambo in Qld a couple of weeks ago my wife went into the post office to buy some stamps. They sold all the usual post office stuff but also did coffee and cafe food as well. We ordered a couple of pies for $8 each which had been homemade and they just reheated them in their pie machine while we waited.

Try the Nindigully Pub near St George they will do a 5/10/20/40kg hamburger, steak  or chicken burger or whatever size you want. You  have to preorder a few days beforehand for the big ones which they usually do for groups on bus tours - probably cost you a bit more than $15 though.

If you in fact eat the whole "Nindi - fkn -gully" Road-train-burger, you get your money back - and I presume; a trip in the RFDS to a cardiac ward. www.nindigullypub.com.au/
