RE: Military Service

Thank you for your service BC. I think you are a pretty brave bloke on a few fronts. I think you would be a pretty interesting bloke to have a beer and a yarn to.

The idea of an artificially created regiment makes me uncomfortable. I know Singapore has a "Gurkha Contingent" in their police force, and Lee Kwan Yew had a squad of Gurkha bodyguards, but that seems OK for them. I don't think the general Australian population would accept such a proposition, though.

the foreign body guards are usually to replace the people they can't trust.

Well, Aussie1, I am "technically" one of those "alphabet" individuals, am an a ex- soldier with many years of service under my belt, and of my time in the army, I think maybe 20% were also "alphabet" individuals. Just because you think, "they" are too soft or leftwing, doesn't give you the right to question their ability to fight for the country and protect it's people. On another note, For your own information, the cut off age to join the Australian Defence Force is 55yo in the event of a war on our shores. and 65yo, for the Home Defence Force, so if you're under these ages would you join? I know I would go back, as I am currently 63yo. to help save my family, and your family as well.

Firstly, thank you for your service. Not sure I understand the term "technically" though.

Anyhow nice to know you will be there if needed.

In the interim, I shall stick with my Chinese language lessons. Nothing wrong with having "two bob each way" if you know what I mean  biggrin

You're digging an even bigger grave here, I am not gay, or Bi, I am technically Trans. I explained it here some weeks ago. Not everybody, within your so called "alphabet" individuals, are gay or bi.

Geez, I have already thank you for your service. What more do you want. So I'm  not a politically correct individual. That's the way I am, get over it.

Cheers and stay safe Cobber.

Ray, I thank you and the others for thanking me for my service, and understand we will not agree on the other matter.

Regarding the "offer" of citizenship in exchange for military service, I was born in England in 1954, moved to Australia in early 1966, enlisted in the RAAF Jan 1972. Somewhere around 1983 I was told that if I wanted to stay in the Air Force I would have to become an Australian Citizen. Ended up with another bit of paper and kept my job until late 1998 when I decided a change of career was needed.
My take on this is that you now need to be a citizen before you can join our military.

In 1976 there were a number of British subjects, Italian & a lone Ukrainian seeking Citizenship through the Army in my platoon at Kapooka and also a number of British subjects in my posted Squadron at Holsworthy seeking same.

It is still a pathway but a little more complicated today along with everything else.
