I was in the UK a couple of years after The Adventures of Barry Mackenzie had premiered and the Poms were still laughing at it. Not only was Barry Humphries the brainchild behind that movie but he also had a comic strip about the character that he wrote that appeared as a magazine and in the press. The Brits thought it was hilarious. The funniest part was that many of them (and Aussies too) thought that Dame Edna was a real person and not a character.
Perhaps the greatest Aussie comedy actor of all time.
I learned words & phrases like 'Chunder' , 'technicolour yawn' & 'a poke in the eye with a burn't stick' & I heard of Fosters - the first time Australia came onto my radar - with thanks to Bazza Mackenzie.
Back then the Aussie phraseology entered the UK vocabulary, (Similarly to Monty Python skits). Folk 'replayed' them in the pubs of an evening. Pints of beer & bad Aussie accents. Within a very short space of time they had become part of the everyday language.
In part Barry Humphries is responsible for my moving here & becoming an Aussie.
I still haven't seen 'The adventures of Barry Mackenzie in it's entirety, but feel I know it intimately as it was very much part of my teenage years.
When we first moved to Australia it felt quite special that our nearest main shopping area was Puckle St in Moonee Ponds. Used to ride up Mt Alexander Rd on my Moto Guzzie LeMans at lunch break to get a bite to eat. Never met Edna though.
