Most of them are ok, Big 4 very good but expensive, Gidday Mate is good, not sure why but not a big fan of Hertage. Just be aware of and keep your eyes open, use a bit of common sense knowing what the enviroment is like at the moment.
More importantly, enjoy yourself with what tha Alice and the area offers

We were there in July last year for the AFL game, stayed at the G Day Mate caravan park which had keypad entry after 6pm and found it excellent, went to all the local attractions including the AFL game, did our shopping at Woolworths in the CBD, went to several bottle shops and didn't notice any trouble at all, did notice a few groups of locals in certain areas which we avoided. The show ground is usually available and is far enough out of town that most "trouble makers" wont go there.

We flew up there for a week, hired a 4x4 camper & spent most of the time in the MacDonnell Ranges.
We went to Anzac Hill for an overall view, walked around Olive Pink Botanic Gardens & checked out the CBD.
Unless you want to buy a souvenir Didgeridoo made in China its just like any other rural town.
If we were passing through with our caravan we'd buy fuel, gas, fill up with water, buy groceries & head out to a campsite at least 50kms out of town.
That's our usual routine in trouble spots.
One of us stays with our rig while the other one shops.
The "locals" usually hover around looking for an opportunity but they've never touched it.

If you wanted to base yourself out of town to explorer the east & west Macdonnells there are possibilities on both sides of town. Ross River Homestead in the East & Glen Helen in the West. The campgrounds at Palm Valley & Ormiston Gorge are NP sites & are also good camp spots to base yourself, with showers & toilets but not sure that they would have powered sites though. When we last stayed in Alice Springs itself we stayed in the Showgrounds, but I think they may only open as an overflow site when all the other CP's are full. It was quiet & peaceful there.

Hi Mark

I have good friends that currently live in Alice Springs and they are quoting that it is the worst that Alice has ever been for violent crime.

Great to ask questions of travellers and tap into their knowledge however most travellers unless actually there today are quoting only history to answer your enquiry.

I worked for a short time in Alice some 6 years ago and some of the stated camp areas can be good or at least could be when I was there.

The current problem is of national concern and you might be well advised to take every precaution. It has been very recently proven that it is not safe even when in numbers in a supermarket.

Be very vigilant. Watch your belongings even items like handbags. You can lose petrol of a night. Diesel is not as much of a worry. If it is not secured there will be a good chance that it wont be yours any longer.

Slightly over the top, just take care when visiting and keep things locked up.
It sounds as if a "lot" of the trouble is at night, l think most of us oldies are all tucked away at those times, again if out and about late, take care
As far as avoiding totally, a bit hard to do if your travelling up that way? biggrin

I have been to most places in the NT and spent years living there off and on. All of Darwin, Katherine, Tennant Creek and Alice Springs, all the little places like Elliott, Timber Creek, all the residential and commercial sites have big cyclone fences, big gates and big dogs. The social problem has been there for decades.

What is happening is not new. It is a symptom of what has been deteriorating for years. It needs to be addressed and it has to be inclusive. If not, give it a few more years and it will be happening in many more places.

It won't be fixed in a short time. It took years to bring it to this but we need to start the process.

The best policy is to avoid these "hot spots" if possible but if you can't, spend minimal time in them while staying vigilant.

We spend most of our time camped out in the bush, it's a lot safer & far more interesting.

A few weeks spent camping in a location with no other human contact & no kind of phone/internet connection is therapeutic for the soul.

In the middle of nowhere but in the centre of it all.

Yes I agree with your thoughts there we usually go to town for a look and supplies but never stay in caravan parks we much prefer rest areas or free cheap camps

If you bother to check the Parliamentary Register Rick, which is available online, you will see that the Alice Springs meeting was scheduled for last December and then postponed when the PM contracted Covid.

Care to tell us about who went there in the previous ten years and what they achieved? I recall the man of many ministries went there and promised 14 million dollars which was never received.

Wasnt it just recently that a high ranking MP flew up to the Alice.?

Does anyone know what that was about.?

I have not heard anything more about that trip however I could have easily missed something.

Secondly I have as much right to have an avatar as anyone else on this forum, however I will take it off if asked.

Might I point out that genuine contributors on any forum actually are proud enough to post using their own name.

My avatar only provides recognition that Australia is in fact my country as well as it is EQUALLY anyone elses who may decide to light a fire or chant or dance or however some may choose to claim that they are welcoming me to my own country.

Keep everything locked at all times and don't go out at night...... especially around the Mall and CBD. Most Caravan parks are about the same as far as security goes its just luck of the draw whether you get robbed or not....

Correct and if anyone thinks it is different in any other town up north e.g. Kimberley region, Darwin etc, you are completely delusional . Why, because no politician has the required B%lls to confront the issue head on. It is going to be just like the Covid situation, learn to live with it folks.

My "unique" way, as you put it, is my personal view on how to handle it. Whether or not my idea has or has not been adapted in other places or countries, I have no idea. And frankly I have no interest in what those other places or countries do. My view is, we are our own people over here and we need to man up and not rely on copying others. Of coarse, our biggest stumbling block is some in our society are hell bent on "political correctness". The other issue we have to live with, in my opinion is, our front line operators e.g. Police, Ambo's, Fire & Rescue, and not forgetting Doctors & Nurses in emergency wards not being properly supported by the Judiciary.

As I said above, unfortunately, we just have to live with it just like Covid. Although, I will say, at least we can be vaccinated against Covid to lesson the severity.

Well Aussie1, do you think the situation we are seeing in some of these towns would be resolved if we just arrested everyone and gave them lengthy gaol terms?

Do you think that would stop those people gaoled from reoffending after they were released and stop everyone else who was not in custody, from offending.

You don't think it is a good idea to look at how some other countries have handled issues such as ours. Why is our situation different?
