Where to get potable water in Ararat, Victoria?

Last week I spent about an hour driving around Ararat trying to find a tap available for public use... and failed.

Usually sports grounds have a few taps around the building but I could not find such in Ararat.

I have, and use, Wikicamps and am aware it shows a tap at the toilet in the main street... there may well be one but the location is all but impossible to access during the day due to traffic. I'm also aware it shows another out of town but I'm trying not to put an extra 25km on my journey to access that one.

Surely there must be water in Ararat!

Just ring Ararat Council and ask them, I'm sure they will help you out. Ararat Council 03 5355 0200.

Thank you, yes that is my intention if this post does not bear fruit. However I'll e-mail them rather than phone as, in my experience, such organisations are quickly and totally confused by such questions - no doubt they'll immediately decide this is a water issue and refer me to the local water authority who will be similarly confused and refer me to the council. E-mail gives them time to think and suggestions may be rebutted without sounding "difficult".

If you went to Green Hill lake, one of the more permanent campers there would be sure know.

Hope you found your water OK.

It raises another question in my mind.
Once, when we were out in the country in a small rental campervan, we were very low on water.

I asked a service station attendant if it would be OK for me to hook up to the tap next to the fuel bowser. (most have them for filling the 'watering can' etc)
It was a small tank and would probably only take 60 litres max.

"No problem" he said.

I can imagine most would not be happy about it though.
Campers clogging up he forecourt filling up with 'free' water.........

I stayed at Green Hill Lake reserve at Ararat the years before covid lockdowns, so it was either 2019 or 2020

The camp (at that time) was was a free but requested a donation of $5 per vehicle, per night
A designated person came around and issued a receipt for the $5

They had good hot showers, and at least 3 potable water taps at that site

Recently encamped at the racecourse in Great Western, there were several accessible taps around the pavilion enclosure. Water was of excellent quality, so says a person who only normally has rain water (Tanks), though I will admit my shaving cream did not lather very well in the ablution block.

Potable water available at the dump point, Green Hill Lake. We filled up earlier this year before heading south to Freshwater Lake camp near Dunkeld.

There might be no Wi-Fi connection in the forest but I promise that you'll find a better connection.
