Memory foam mattresses

Hi everyone, we are looking at changing our mattress to a memory foam, I would like to know band names of the best for back and neck problems.

I use a Tempur brand. Was at the stage of using two sticks to walk with, had hips xrayed and couldnt find the problem, bought the mattress and within a week the problem was gone. Not cheap, works for us.

We have an ergoflex memory foam mattress at home and love it, just a bit heavy for our van and pricey. Have been looking into Origin Memory Foam.

My late wife told I was hot in bed but then discovered it was the memory foam that made me hot Got rid of of that style of mattress for a spring style and I'm not as hot.

Tempur are OK but there are many densities so need to carefully try in the shop. My discovery was that a bit softer was better for the back than harder ones. Soft does not mean not firm though so base is important solid board base and soft memory foam was my conclusion.

Never had a memory foam mattress but I imagine that any memory foam mattress will probably be both relatively heavy & pricey. We have found our pocket spring mattress with a 'plush' top to be good for my wife's hip bursitis & definitely cooler than other foam mattresses we've had in hot climates.

If you know from experience that memory foam is the only/best solution you may have to pay a weight penalty .......... unless a memory foam topper would be any good for you?

Mention has been made about memory foam of different densities. No doubt a lower density will weigh less, but if it were me I'd want to be pretty sure that it was going to be as good as the one you have at home before parting with the money, because as you say they are not cheap.

When I had my van I bought a memory foam topper.

The problem with doing this is that the ones that are available arent the same shape or size as the caravan mattress.

I found a local woman who did sewing as a hobby and side business and I hade her cut and trim the topper to fit the van mattress.

This was a cheap solution to help with my comfort without buying a complete new mattress.

We have a memory foam mattress at home, I find it a bit unnerving, when you walk up to it, it sucks down to my body shape. As I walk past it, it returns to its flat shape. It's like, it remembers my shape when I slept on it!
It also retains body heat they don't tell you that when you buy it.

I think he was thinking more along the lines of POKE A HANTAS Dougwe. sprint.gif

We bought a good quality egg shell type foam rubber overlay at Harris Scarfe, to go on top of our innerspring mattress in the caravan.

It made it considerably more comfortable & stopped us both having sore hip joints. smilesmile

Like I said we have a bed with a memory foam mattress, or rather two King size singles joined together. Yes, with the up and down head a leg tilting etc. The wife uses that, I just wanted a standard bed. I think the main advantage with memory foam, is not with the end user, but for the manufacturer. For transportation, the mattress can be pressed down (and the air extracted) to a small solid block. Imagine sending a King size mattress over, would cost a fortune.
On receipt of the package, you find a large space and cut the straps, plastic wrapping etc., and wait 5 days and the foam grows back to its original shape/size, hence the name memory foam. Don't even think of returning it to the supplier.'
Apparently, the foam responds to heat and weight, so a pressure point of your body on the mattress will warm it up and so will soften. So, it conforms to the shape of your body, provided you don't move. My wife has a soft mattress, I have a hard mattress, they only came in two variants. I don't notice my side softening, but the other mattress does, but already it is showing hollows and looking a bit aged.
They sold us a mattress fitted cover, the fabric supposably has rock or something in it, to reflect the heat back, can't tell any difference, my cover has been taken off. The foam retains body heat, if you look up heat problems on the net, it is a popular subject.
I personally prefer a standard pocket spring mattress, Queen size max, much easier to make, those foam mattresses are so heavy.
All I can say is do your homework carefully.

Sorry Chief, thinking of Fonzie, who would never say he was uncool, or not hot.

We use Lambswool mattress covers on innerspring mattress (single beds) - expensive but a good nights sleep.

The child-bride uses blizzard proof overlay and flannelette sheets, then sleeps with one leg hanging out, whereas I use cotton sheets and rarely, in Winter, a light cotton (hospital type) blanket.

I too was having issues with my hips with the foam mattress in my motorhome. One day I spotted my old Thermarest camping mats and decided to use them on top off the foam mattress. They're quite comfortable and my hip issues are almost gone now.
