Fraser Island Name Change HAVE YOUR SAY

The Palaszczuk Government wishes to change the name of Fraser Island to K'gari in recognition of the Butchulla tribe. It's time to have your say as the proposal is open for public consultation until October 3.

To have your say , visit         https://haveyoursay.resources.qld.gov.au/k-gari-place-name-proposal

The Victorian Government changed the name of the Grampians (named by Scottish explorer Thomas Mitchell after a mountain range in Scotland) quite a few years ago.
They named it Gariwerd, an aboriginal name, almost everyone still call it the Grampians.

Only a matter of time before we will all be required to have our personal names changed to something indigenous. I do hope we are given the chance to pick our own new name as I can think of some real doozies. So excited about that prospect :)

What is a "hate post"?

Is it (rather like Buzz Lightbulb's approach) a post which holds a position contrary to your views?

This is just too stupid for words. The indigenous peoples never had a written language, so the logical way to write down their spoken word would be by using a phonetic spelling. How does one get "Gurri" from "K'gari"? If the name is pronounced as "gurri", then why complicate it?

"We are seeking feedback on a proposal to change the name of Fraser Island and its associated locality to Kgari (pronounced GUR-rie or Gurri), the Butchulla Peoples traditional name for the island."

Who cares if the place also gets an indigenous name. I reckon we have more indigenous names for towns in Australia than probably names originating from the United Kingdom

Our national capital Canberra is an indigenous name, so is Ballarat, Bundaberg, Wollongong, Wagga Wagga, Parramatta just to name a few. I know from living on the north coast there are various names for various places, depending on how long one has lived here.

@DMaxer, I actually agree with you. I just don't understand why it shouldn't be called Gurri or Gurri Island.

Why not call it Fraser Island?

Why not test the water by trying to rename Brisbane first. See how that gets past the locals. Although that would probably be political suicide.

I agree with Dogbox. Leave things alone.

Robert.

No hate intended (Just to keep brickies happy) but my view is these "issues" are generated not by indigenous folks but usually buy white's who like to take control on their behalf, ridiculous in my opinion.

 Got to agree with that.

if each person who claims to be indigenous (2 % of population ) was given $ 1,000,000 do you think that would fix the problem ?

i would bet that very little would end up in the bush, were it could do some good to improve the life style of the real indigenous people. most would end up in the pockets of the blond hair, blue eye city dwellers.

i recall being told as far back as the 1970's that the "aboriginal industry" would be a big thing

I noted Ash Barty was claimed as Aboriginal because she is one sixteenth of that blood.

If my calculations are correct and we assume each generation produces children when aged 30 years then to be one sixteenth we have to go back 120 years which, as best I can tell, makes me seven different nationalities plus Australian.

I suggest that unless you are 25% blood or more then you really should not be trying to claim blood membership of another race.

The young indigenous population of Bourke don't seem interested in changing their towns name.
They're too busy listening to hip hop on their ghetto blasters, spraying graffiti on walls & checking door handles on parked cars to see if they're unlocked.
All wearing reversed New York baseball caps.
They don't seem interested in heading out bush to dig for witchety grubs either.

i think it was g Whitlam who open the can of worm that said if you identify (?) as being aboriginal you can claim to be aboriginal with all the benefits

if you compere Australia to Europe/Asia that has been ravaged by wars each country invading their neighbors or being invaded for thousands of years their gene pool could be considered somewhat mixed but they still have national identities

outside of the bombing of Darwin we have never been at war on home soil unless you consider the indigenous people waring between themselves or the white mans coming ,which was insidious over a long time

i wonder if ASH BARTY claims any benefits or if she was just stating a fact to encourage other to aim higher ?

Given Ash Barty's record of not just high performance, her personal attitude is one of the highest levels we have experienced in this country for many a year.

I have no doubt that she is stating a fact to encourage others to aim higher. In that she is, in my opinion, targeting All Aussies.

There have been many wars within Australia (and Massacre's) - against the Aboriginal Nations by white squatters and settlers since 1782.

May well be true but, our current society are not responsible for the actions over which we had no control. Nothing whatsoever done now will change history.

If people feel differently, then personally, I refuse to be responsible for how they feel.

Changing names does nothing at all, my opinion.

would you call them wars that go on for years or local conflicts between the insidious white fella and a local tribe. to me a war is a conflict between two armies (or organized entities) i do not think you call the aboriginal resistance very organized if it was organized the out come may have been very different . a lot of terrible things were done but worse was done in the conflicts overseas not that it makes what happened here justified by any means

in this day and age we should all be AUSTRALIANS first, them we can claim our heritage from there. as mike pointed out most of us are bitizas from way back .

What's in a name to quote a famous Phase.

If we call it Fraser Island or something else it really doesn't matter. It is just more virtue signalling that neither gains or loses anything to any body.

Jacinta Price has hit the nail right on the head. All of this bs takes away from the real issues that her people are suffering and does nothing to help correct those.
The aboriginal industry has allowed a small minority to get wealthy on the millions that successive governments have tipped into this and the people that really need it are still suffering.
We need a few more Jacinta's in Federal Parliament.

Greg said this and I completely agree,

*Jacinta Price has hit the nail right on the head. All of this bs takes away from the real issues that her people are suffering and does nothing to help correct those.*

A parliament based on the principles of that woman would go far to correct a lot of problems.

Why change any name?

It is just another cost to our country, our states and our communities that we can ill afford.

Overly emotive Possum3.

Such things have happened since the dawn of time.

And are you perhaps suggesting Aborigines did not do similar to white settlers? They did.

Or are Aborigines perfect examples of considerate humanity despite their utterly appalling record of domestic violence.

Let's not get carried away with the "Nobel Savage" myth.

Why do people feel so threatened just because people would like an additional name to a place. You can still go there, no one has taken anything from you, don't be so mean spirited.

I think Australia is probably the only country colonised by the British that hasn't had a major war or revolution to get rid of them. I am sure they were always the most honourable of occupiers so it must have been something that was lost in the translation that made all those locals throughout the World want to boot them out.

Is disagreeing now synonymous with "feeling threatened" then Dmaxer?
