the caravan is now sold and the ford tow car as well .......so i have brought a nice touring tent and a 323 Mazda wagon that i can pack and away for time out .......during my trips away my partner who has her own place will be looked after by her son and his wife she lives in a retirment village and stays with me 4 days a week she has a heart problem and cant van/travel anymore .........i am quite hapy to downsize to a tent as the van was costing lots of fuel to tow around .......ill be away mostly 3/4 days max when i go with the dog and of course my fishing and crabing gear ......hope i can still contribute here from time to time .....cheers all

We only have a car, do have a tent but are too lazy to put it up so mostly sleep in the car. The fridge is the largest item so that sits on the passenger seat & the rest up front.

 

If you are really well organised you don't have to go without. The good thing with only a car you can "disappear" for the night.

being ex army and under canvas many times years ago i will find it ok i think

I couldn't cope with living under canvas. We have Thermarest self inflating mattresses. Last one I bought was the 75mm luxury map.

 

If not using our small tent, we have insulated the car, even with ice on it it's not too cold in the morning. Also cut windscreen sunscreens to fit every window. Makes it a lot warmer & stops condensation.

 

More importantly we hand grind coffee beans while remote, so don't go without.

From 1972 to 2010 we were tent campers travelling all over Australia.
If you're organised well tenting is a great way to travel.
We have a modest caravan now without an ensuite, we erect a tent toilet to house a Porta-Potty.
We could easily go back to tents.
We're campers, not caravaners or glampers.

I'm an avid bird/wildlife photographer which means I often go bush into the more remote areas for a night or two setting up in places where the van is best left home. I cant be buggered organizing, cleaning up and towing a caravan for short periods, and I'm generally alone. My small tent comes in handy, but I'm thinking about one a little larger now, and one of the centre pole umbrella style ones that are very quick to erect, and full head height. Also tossing over the idea of an elevated Swag, but like the idea of cooking inside a tent if the weather turns nasty....nasty weather and tenting is one big downside.

I have no qualms about sleeping under canvas, in fact I find it somewhat satisfying and cosy. These days though I have the need of a good camp bed, not an inflatable mattress, as getting up off the ground is an effort with creaky joints and knee prosthetics, and its something to sit on.

Good luck, have fun, and may the ground you peg be soft and dry ..............

 Sure, I have many years worth, and many thousands. I do post on  nature specific forums. I'll find time to put some on here. Thanks your photos of Finches ( Nutmegs, Zebras and Redheads), brought back memories when I kept them in my young teenage years

Tried to trap Zebras in a purchased bird trap with a caller ( one of my finches) in a creek below Mt Cootha in Brisbane to no avail.

 About 6 feet away is usually what I usually try to get, but sometimes an arms length away
