Have been hearing a lot lately about Roadside Assistance programs. I have the the top cover and am a longtime member 20yrs. (Not that that has been any benefit to me) as I really haven't had to call them. Getting A 10% discount on something that you might buy once in 10yrs is nothing. I was always happy to have them there to call if I got into trouble because I do a lot of remote travel and the chances are....
The issue came up in discussions with friends the other day. "Will Roadside Assistance come out and give you a tow if you hit a kangaroo?"
The answer is "No" It is considered an insurance claim and you should call your insurance company. This is considered an accident and not a mechanical breakdown.
Well I rang them to verify this and this is true.
I appreciate the difference and probably agree with it.
However, I had never really thought too much about it. It was just a case for me of,
if I have a problem when I am out and about then call Roadside Assistance
Now I have to decide whether I have had an accident or a mechanical problem. One of the examples I asked about was if I ran off the road and got bogged. Would they come and tow me out? Maybe, maybe not. If there was no damage then yes but if I damaged my wheel or something then no.
Just thought I would put this up in case you hadn't thought about it either.

Good post, and thanks for the advice. Now I will have to approach RACQ who I took out cover with when I has plans to explore remotely, and see what their stance is. Cheers
It was always clear to me that breakdown cover does not apply to accidents; at a simple practical level the breakdown guy is not equipped to deal with a damaged vehicle.
I have had RACV's top level of breakdown cover for years and as I regularly went into serious 4WD bush in the High Country, and elsewhere, I called RACV to ask what happens if I break down on a remote track, the answer was that if they can "reasonably" get the breakdown vehicle or tow truck in there then they will recover me which is about as much as you can reasonably ask.
In the event of becoming bogged I suspect and expect you are on your own and, again, I have no issue with that. If you are going to such places then you should be equipped to get yourself unbogged and not expect mummy to do it for you.
A question people with caravans may wish to pose is; what happens if I need car and van towed and have a non standard tow hitch?
I have only used my RACV breakdown cover once and was very impressed by their attitude, efficiency, capability and willingness to get my problem resolved without worrying about the fine details of the policy. Their approach was very much a "get the job done" one.

i hit a kangaroo, which took out the radiator when i rang for assistance i was informed that i was not covered for single vehicle accidents . a bit of bush mechanics to get into the next town to effect repairs three later days on the road again claimed on insurance they payed for repairs and accommodation
best to check an confirm what your covered for rather than find out when you are in the middle of nowhere
All my roadside assistance , which was $6 extra on our car insurance, gives me/us a breakdown service, of quick fixes, they list 9 issues, and if not fixed on the side of the road, then towed up to 200km from breakdown spot, it includes the camper. Cheap, and as I have used them once with the old vehicle, they do do everything on the list, plus they towed it 270km, I just paid extra for the 70km, which was $56

Mike like you, had a positive experience when the car blew a transmission oil cooler line bringing the car to a stop.
My Queensland Club RACQ Ultimate to the rescue, no head arches, car to a transmission repairer, caravan into the caravan park.
We do believe it is good value having the best road service.
I read the supplied paper work and aware of RACQ Roadservice remote limitations.
