Outdoor cooking - Open burner cooker or closed lid type?


I was just going through a few different choices of cooking outside my new motorhome and

particularly the choice between open burner types and the closed lid type, such as Weber BabyQ's.

 

I was looking through the Dometic website in particular which displayed both types.

 

Not looking to start a war on which brand is better than another but what type you have found

the best to suit your needs. Perhaps you have enough room to carry both types with you.

I don't have this luxury, so I am looking to make a choice. I know I can always change my mind later.

It's not the end of the world and not a great deal of $'s are involved.

 

I love the benefits and advantages of both types but would love to hear from you.

You can use the Weber with the lid either..... Up or Down .
Best of both worlds .
Webers seem to "do the job" alright.

agree with KJB webber can be used as either or and seems to be the preferred option . on a slightly different note if you are planning to use a BBQ of a bayonet fitting fitted to the motorhome just check on the current regulations as i believe there has been a change recently . something to do with flameout shut-off i think .

We are in a car only so the smallest setup we came up with is a metho burner. 2 pots, one for boiling water and the second for meals. We buy fried food in town to save work cleaning.

G'day Wayne,

I have a Baby Weber Q set up out side just out of awning area to allow smoke to escape easier and love it. All my cooking is done outside. I also have a Air Fryer for when on 240v and weather not suitable to use Weber, that is set up under awning. I also have a single Induction cook top for if ever needed and has been used a bit as well.

The Weber is the only thing with any weight in it and is included in my calculations etc.

How much does your Webber weigh (approximately) Doug? Do you connect it via the bayonet fitting on the van or via one of the gas bottles.

G'day BigD,

Gas bottle mate (also in calculations) As I said it sits just out of awning and prefer to use gas bottle. I do have a Bayonet fitting but in the wrong spot.

My bayonet is in the right position Doug but I guess I would need an extension on the gas hose if I was going to use it outside of awning so gas bottle would be the go. What I need to know though is how much does the Weber Baby Q weigh approximately.

 I bought a babyq.  But only use at home. 

 

We use a gasmate voyager. A tad lighter and fits in the tunnel boot, babyq was too high

 Hi Wayne.

As we have aged a bit more, we find we do not consume bbq style cooking, the slide out bbq now lives on the shelf in the shed waiting to be sold on.

We do carry in the ute for picnics a lunch box carriage gas stove and a lided fly pan which is very universal  for casual cooking.

We do a good 95% cooking our in caravan and enjoy our healthy style eating. We do enjoy a "t bone" cooked on our camp fire but not multi times a weeek.

So, we are no to carrying a bbq.
