That's why I rely on normal paper maps, and a compass, I have never screwed that up, but mainly for bike touring. My wife has been using this non google "MAPS" system, that has been quite accurate, for our camper trips, but I still bring my army maps along, for any and all trips.

At least Google maps has finally discovered that marking roads in pale yellow on a white background is impossible to see, and has changed to black roads on a white background! A real improvement!

The truck driver in that news article made a fiundamental error that is not the fault of the map.
He drove off the edge of the road, possibly to avoid some deeper water.
The road is almost always the hardest place, even if it is under water, packed down after years of traffic. Leave it at your peril.
Cheers,
Peter

The basic problem was inexperienced travellers not checking road conditions on any road in, there was a choice. Maybe city people are brain lazy and too used to DR Google.

Not only errors with digital maps. Paper maps have issues.

When traveling just make sure you take water, food & brain!

Any member of the public can access Google maps & change, add, revise whatever they like.
Like most social media its the sum of its contributors.
Locally, I revised/deleted some misinformation on Google maps in our local area yesterday.
So easy to do.
A system like Google maps is prone to mistakes.
I wouldn't navigate out in the bush with it.
Give me a Hema map every time.
It's handy for finding some things in suburbia sometimes though.

I use Magic Earth on my phone. The maps are based on Open Street Maps which are maintained by the public and therefore, usually by the locals who want the maps to be right.

The maps for a country can be downloaded and therefore is not reliant on an internet connection. It also doesn't invade one's privacy.

One day my Google Maps icon spontaneously changed to the one below and the roads were in black on white instead of yellow on white as it was previously, see images below.
