Yes.

There is merit.  Special discounts, special places to stay, regular meetups, tag-alongs, friendship.

A couple of years ago we were camped at a nice quiet spot on the Paroo River less than a kilometer out of Eulo QLD.
One day we were inundated with a group of around 30 caravans.
There seemed to be two extremely bossy individuals shouting orders to all of the others.
We walked up to the Eulo Pub for a drink in the bar (for some peace & quiet) & happened to mention that we'd been swamped by a caravan club.
The owner just laughed & told us that they had wanted to camp (paid) in his campground but wanted two other campers that had been staying there to move so that THEY could all be together.
He told them ''no way'' that was going to happen. They got quite upset.
Before leaving to head down to the river they asked him if they could use the pubs water to wash all their caravans?
He said ##@@$$%%^^&&**(())!!!!!!!!!
The morning after, we bumped into two of the members & asked them where they were heading?
They told us that they didn't know & were awaiting further instructions from their intrepid leaders.

Hi 86GTS,

Yep , We have come across these sort of situations on a couple of occasions. On one occasion we were setting up at a park and was told by "Adolf", the caravan club fearless leader (that's the new name we gave him) said "You can't park there we have others from our club needing that spot arriving soon". I rang the person running the park (not on site) and she said just park where it suits you. Oh, what an unhappy punter Adolf was when next we had a chat :)
There really are some tossers out there. And why is the "Commandant" usually always the fattest and has a beard, I guess it's part of the uniform.
Anyhow if that "Army style camping" is your bag, go for it. You sad buggers :)

I make no comment upon the ACC which is probably a fine organisation but when the subject of clubs arises I am always reminded of a quotation from  Groucho Marx which, pretty much, applies to me too:

"I refuse to join any club that would have me as a member."

I now question any organisation that has me also.

My last club I joined, I really liked their monthly mag but I then learnt they used caravaners number to burst their goals but they really only represented their small number of full members.

Ps. I hope I am not starting ww5.

Just using one or two of the benefits could easily recoup the membership fee.

(A person does not need to be involved in any club meetups or safari's etc. )

All clubs and organizations have rules and institutionalized principals. Lots of members join to get benefits but hate being regulated at all. Its just human nature.

I am betting you are all a club member of some sort. I mean its you choice really.

How about a club where we all contribute a few bucks to a kitty and if one of us damages their car the kitty pays for repairs....Its a club  but called insurance ain't it. You have break down clubs as well right...

So what's wrong with folks getting together to start a caravan club that brings benefits to caravanners. What about promoting dump points and calling towns; caravan friendly, if they allow freecamping.

Why would you knock an organisation simply based on a fellows alleged view of his experiences in meeting an alleged group of caravanners. The group he met is not representative of all the folks in Ozz is it.

There is no doubt that we will not fit into a club per se. But it is just a simple choice to make. Me I stay away from clubs as I dislike any regimentation. Plenty of guys like it. Its why they join the army.smile
