Last week I camped at the Tallangatta (Victoria) Showgrounds, this is a large grassed area (25 acres?) with power and water points around most of its expanse, one may camp anywhere, no designated spots. I had been there for eight days camped 20m from a single woman, she had her car parked in that space reducing the available distance between us. There were only a dozen or so caravans in the entire area.
The day before leaving I nipped out around 10am to fill up with diesel and buy milk and bread. Damn me but upon my return I discovered a caravan, Nissan Patrol and an old Holden sedan crammed into the space between me and the woman! There was now barely enough space for me to open the van windows and I doubt the woman would be able to get her car out with fewer than a 30 point turn! He then proceeded to run over my power cable... twice. My new neighbours were a couple in their eighties I guess - I was surprised to find it was possible to survive that long being both rude and stupid.
Stay cool Harding, you're leaving tomorrow - so I did, on both counts.
I drove to Nug Nug Reserve, 100km south, and found a spot at the back without services and no one else around, all good. The reserve is 75% empty now most of the holidaymakers having left.
Damn me! this morning at 10am a guy with a camper trailer and two boys decided to set up 10m from me! There is a *heap* of other space he could have used.
Ho hum....
This is why I like to spend much of my time deep in the bush "Far From the Madding Crowd."

It's not just me: I was kindly invited to the campfire of a group of 10 of so tonight who are camped 100m from me and they commented upon the proximity of the new arrivals.
Please people: do not camp too close to others - they don't like it.

Hi Mike
Although we are newbies to travelling full time nearly five years we have had numerous people setup very close to us with acres around us where their is no one.
I dont no what the attraction is maybe its my good looks or the music we play ( I wish) but if they cross the line of being to smart I bring out the peacemaker the good old generator lock your self indoors with the air on and make sure it nice and loud and happy days and if that does not work Im sure a Micheal Boulton CD might do it
Cheers

Many years ago we travelled Australia in our motorhome for 3 years (2003-2006) and this we will never forget.
Somewhere near Normanton we found a freedom camping site. From memory we drove along dirt road following a river that we explored for about 5 or 6 km before u-turning and returning another kilometer or two and choosing a random spot to camp. Locals will know it. To the left of us for the entire distance was perhaps 50m of flat grass to the river and to the right at least another 100m. We never saw another vehicle. Parking for maybe several thousand RVers?
We settled down and guess what along comes a Coaster bus and parks within 1m yes 1m!!! Why?
West coast Eyre Peninsula a few years ago, hundreds of opportunities for respectable distance. We were the only ones in the entire greater area for 4 nights. What more could one ask for.
Second night a group camped next to us that even the mosquitoes had issues with, with the obstacle course of guy ropes crossing each other.
I don't get it. We have more distance in our Sydney block of units!

Anyone that has camped at Gregory Qld, down by the river knows that space is a premium, so it is first comes rules. We were camped there in 2018 with awning extended, when we went up to pub for lunch a camper trailer actually camped in under our awning - needless to say I politely advised him that it would be a better option to camp further up the bank - he decamped whilst swearing and advising me how us old farts didn't deserve the luxury of "Free Camps" because of the massive amount of Govt money we are given. I told him that "we were so poor I could barely afford to spend the money on the shotgun cartridge I'm going to waste". He actually stopped giving lip at that point and left the area.
