Yes dabbler, the NSW and VIC figures are frightening.
The report I heard on the news today that they will stop reporting actual figures. This was not acceptable by some health officials that appeared later for comment. I did not get the name of the health representative they interviewed on Ch 9 but he was concerned that if the numbers arent recorded each day then we or at least they, have no idea if vaccinations, boosters, masks and other control methods are actually working over any period of time.
The concern is there, right across the board of not only medical and pandemic personnel but from the majority of the general public as well.
Here in WA we are pretty covid free at the moment 5th of Feb i expect that to change, there has been calls to put the border opening back to May, it would not bother me if it was kept closed but i feel for people with family and friends interstate i have a feeling many in WA are in for one hell of a shock when the border is opened
It has been extremely sad that so many families have not been able to catch up personally over the last almost two years.
It was a similar situation in Qld as it is in WA until the borders were opened.
I have not been well health wise over the last 18 months or so and my children in NSW could not come up probably when I needed them most.
We have been talking recently of them visiting but I have a depleted immune system and for that reason they have decided to hang on a bit longer as they dont want to risk my health.
It now seems unnecessary that the state is open to anyone and the checks on the borders are obviously not working as they expected.
From what I have seen in Qld since Xmas the WA boss is doing a good job.
The QLD govt said it would help business to open borders but I read and see on the news that there was no improvement for most business in the Whitsunday area as either those needing to enter were unvaxed or they had lost their staff due to Covid. Many locals just wont go out unless absolutely necessary and so many travellers have either cancelled or their accomodation has been cancelled by the resorts.
In QLD in my opinion we were better off staying locked at the border.

Hahaha, but not so funny, the advice from the Premier as related by the news commentator on TV this morning is that she advises all Queenslanders to stay home for the next 6 weeks.
What a pathetic situation.
If Qld continues to get 10,000 new cases per day for the next 6 weeks then on top of the numbers we already have in Qld that amounts to a new 420,000 cases.
With the Delta and Omicron variants it seems to start in NSW and then spread to the rest of Australia because the NSW premiers and health minister expect everyone to catch Covid-19. All the other states would have been better off if they'd shut the borders to NSW before both variants ran riot.
Many health experts are saying Omicron isn't the issue we think it is. Delta and unvaccinated account for almost everyone in ICU and very few deaths due to Omicron (and it's not reported if they were vaxxed). Yes it's a strain on the country. But why, apart from misogyny and an a hatred of Labor, are we singling out Queensland ? Open your eyes and ears, it's a nation-wide issue and WA will probably join the rest of us in a few weeks. Get vaccinated, have your boosters, wear N95 masks.

Was that tongue in cheek montie, or are you happy with the way the state of Qld is fairing at the moment.
I know from people I talk to I have not found anyone that is happy with how the state is going with this new actions towards Covid 19.
If you are in fact serious, I dont think we will all perish but this will have a profound affect on Qld and the country for many years.
Our Premier says 6 weeks, I hope you have got 6 weeks supply of your single malt.
The Omricon variant, which is now the dominant one, is nothing more than a common cold for those who are vaccinated. Most countries including Australia have decided to lift restrictions and let it take it's course which will eventually provide immunity for everybody.
It had to happen sometime, we can't stay locked down forever! Over the next 6/8 weeks we will see how well various Govts have planned for it.
I am double vaccinated. I am now due for my booster.
Due to a current illness my immune system is deficient. Currently the doctors dont want me to get the booster but with ongoing blood tests I may be able to have the booster in the future.
My recent visit to hospital last Friday revealed that there are many many people that are in the same boat as me. Upwards of 4 hours waiting. Specialist doctors opting to be contactless with patients by doing phone and tele interviews. I find this difficult particularly as many of our specialist doctors are from other countries and difficult to understand, even if person on person.
There are staff that are trying their best under extreme pressure and this is causing more stress with both themselves and with patients and with the failing system.
I note that it seems easy for some to claim that this pandemic after all it is just a cold. At the same time it is reported today that people are dying in numbers from the pandemic. Wasnt it 9 in Victoria this morning and a similar figure in NSW.
A simple cold related to the pandemic may not be just a cold to many others. I suppose that all is ok provided you are of good health when you get this new variety of the pandemic. I am a single person and having to go out for anything can be a terrifying experience and god help those in hospital in those states which are now opening wards to Covid and non Covid patients due to staff shortages and medical staff having to isolate.
In my opinion no matter which way you want justify the actions that are causing this current situation there are thousands of people that arent perfect with their health and have the right to be protected by those who should be responsible for EVERYONES well being.
It is a shambles and the greed of some to place wealth before health is not Australian. As others have said there has been little gain in opening, particularly for some regional areas as has been reported.
Those in control knew the opening of everything would cause a huge number of those with infections and would place a massive strain on our hospital system regardless of what state you are in.
What will it really be like in 6 weeks.

Not just in QLD. Down here in Mexico is bad too, really bad. They say get a RAT but you can't get 'em. We don't get to know where public exposure sites are anymore so we can't keep clear of them even if we wanted to. I would rather know that info instead of numbers every day. Any wonder the numbers are out of this world.
I think I'm still on topic

Spot on Dougwe. Only WA is "stable" but opening up 2 weeks before the expected peak end for Omicron will see a surge there and possibly lead to second Omicron wave in other states. We unavoidably need to travel to NSW in late Jan and return to Qld in Feb but finding RAT kits is impossible.
Well, 731 in hospital and 109 in ICU in Vic today. Perhaps Dans conservative approach was the right one. Clearly he opened up due to political/business pressure.
In AU 92% are double dosed vaccinated. So, 26,000,000 population that leaves 2ml not double vaccinated. That's a lot of potential patients, not to mention the vaccinated that will be unlucky enough to also come down with covid.
Long story, but I was I was recently told (pretty reliable source) that in UK where they were not so strict with the idea of helping keep businesses going has back fired, big time.
Every bugger is sick and at home, in hospital, perhaps dying or just **** scared they will get covid so nobody is out spending and shortages. Plus transport issues across the channel has not helped.
IMO,
People can winge about the mismanagement by politicians all they like, the problem is viruses replicate every few hours, and there are lots (many millions more than there are humans) of them. Every replication is an opportunity for change. (mutate if you like, this is normal) So evolution of the virus is very, very fast and more likely than it is for most animals or for humans. For the experts to predict what a virus will evolve to in a few months is like predicting human evolution over many, many millions of years. In a word, impossible.
Infections are very high throughout the 3rd world, this increases the opportunity for the virus to change rapidly. In this case the changes appear to be very significant. (big steps) For example, the omicron version is happily infecting everyone in summer now as opposed to winter. Thats pretty unusual for viruses. That is why decisions are being made on the run. And yes sometimes they get it wrong or are influenced due to outside pressures. e.g demonstrations, big business constantly complaining, budgets, opposition parties.
Frankly I'm sick and tired of listening to business complain. Some can sell last years yacht purchase, I cant. The aren't the only ones out of pocket.
And humanity could be in real strife if this pandemic isn't brought under control soon. Imagine if the next change we get a 30% death rate. That's why everyone should do their bit.
I don't know what happens if it gets out of control in China. We rely on their products including a lot of medical gear and PPE.
"Imagine if the next change we get a 30% death rate." I put something similar up a while ago as hypothetical and basically was called an idiot.
A lot of people bag Dan for how he controlled it. Dan was taking advise from health professionals. Like Dan or not he did as advised. And I wonder how many the bag him are anti labour or have had a direct effect on themselves. Would they have been the same if the other party was in. Probably. Would they all whing if it went the other way, no lockdowns and big hospital admissions and deaths, probably How would we have gone if we weren't lockdown when unvaccinated and Delta started. We would be like were going now only who knows how many thousands dead. Yes businesses suffered but you tell me. How much is your mum, dad, wife, husband, daughter, son, grandparents, best friends worth. Any one of them could be dead. Dont care about them what about yourself. Now we're vaxed and Onicron seems less deadly we opened up, maybe due to political/business pressure. No going back now, can't put it back in the bottle. You'll catch it, just hope it's mild and you get over it. It's coming for everyone.

The last I heard the epidemiologists did not know how deadly Omicron was. There was talk that it was five times more contagious but five times less deadly. That just means that it produces the same number of deaths.
If we let SARS-CoV2 rip throughout the population then it will mutate into another variant and there is no way of predicting how virulent or deadly that variant will be.
It's false economy to not to try and control COVID-19. People seem to forget that this is a pandemic and it must be controlled. Unless the government is actually doing something about overpopulation.
My opening post was to hilight the verbal headline from news services as to how Qld was in a State of Emergency. My post was based on my thoughts and observations. The topic wandered off a bit but rightly so, considering the current state of the country.
26,000,000 people live on an island. How easy would it have been to control this within the people. The various states that applied state border closures were classic examples of how shutting the gate controls the virus. Close the big border around the entire country to the movement of people would have been a no brainer. Unfortunately the no brainer was from those who run the country.
Eventually there will be a vaccination or a antibiotic that will prevent and control the pandemic, China probably already have one. China probably also have a master plan on the release of future variants just to keep us on our collective toes and to control how weak they want selective countries to become. China is not managed by a political party but run by a communist regime. Their people cant vote them out. No one can get rid of them in a civilised manner as we all might come to expect in our modern world.
Whether we stop bowing and scraping to China now or in the future will only be a matter of time. It will be a leader of the future that will press the button to stop Chinas current passive but very active aggression toward countries that they want to control.
It may not be popular and it may not be humane but it will happen. Our world cannot continually cope with the constant weakening of our economies and the physical and mental state of the worlds population.

Probably because most of us, well I hope most of us, are not racicts
Ian
Ian, there is NO racist comment in Brodie's post. He has stated a well known fact, the virus DID originate in China. Calling someone a racist without giving your reasoning is all the fashion nowadays because YOU feel offended. Facts don't care about opinions, they just are.
