Permalink Closed

Hi All,

Well here we go, a few days into 2022 and two topics closed already due to, frankly, nasty responses and remarks.

As a keen member and reader of this great informative website I must say it never ceases to amaze me how some, not many, on here are so very quick to have a go at fellow members.  You don't need to be cutting to make a point.

Keyboard warriors not welcome I say.

How about we have a New Year with a bit of understanding and kindness and cut the nastiness?

I like and agree with the sentiment Vince.

I doubt we will notice any difference somehow.

Hopefully it has been Covid, hope it soon goes away.

Really shouldn't need to be reminded about this as it is clearly stated in the 'sticky'. Unfortunately, a very small minority of misanthropes stand out unnecessarily and it leads to responses such as yours. We all feel your frustration, because this is actually a nice haven for us GN's, but it is occasionally infected by negative posters. Life.

I do agree, who could not?

However, keep in mind that robust debate does not equal abuse.

Name calling and such is simply childish but there is a line here: I well recall the UK Chancellor Dennis Healy's comment that being attacked [verbally in parliament] by Geoffrey Howe was "Like being savaged by a dead sheep."

And a similar political quote, of which I cannot remember the originator, at the time of someone's death was "He was a humble man... with much to be humble about."

Nothing at all wrong with robust debate, indeed there is a good deal right with it - if you do not feel strongly enough about something to feel a little emotion then you should probably not debate it.

I think perhaps it should read "robust debate should not include abuse"

You may think so but that was not what I said: my simple statement was clear and unambiguous.

Mike,
Yes you are correct, your statement was simple and unambiguous.
BUT what I said was "I think perhaps it should read......"
I didn't erroneously say "you said ....."

I was unaware, that any topic had been closed in 2022

Edit to say, I am a bit slow on the uptake today, I have just found a topic, which has been closed

I agree totally and not so long ago almost pulled out of this site.
Some members need to be pulled into line by admin occasionally and be given a little holiday.

There are some posts on here that i simply do not read.

There are a number of repeat offenders, who's comments i simply do not read, i simply class them as oxygen thieves, and scroll on by.

It is becoming the same in the jokes section. What some people think of as funny, is just a bit too degrading and in the wrong section.

Again, the same repeat offenders, i simply do not read posts made by at least two people in there.

We all have the freedom to post things in here. We all have the same right to just dismiss some of them as bumbling, ignorant fools.

Very narrow minded of you Graham, you could be missing the point if you don't read everything.

Cheers Bob

I guess it would be also just as easy for them to put you in the same category, if you go calling them, to quote you "bumbling, ignorant fools."

Hey, just saying, !!

We are all different and you can think what you want, but, as soon as you put it out there on social media, well now, thats when the fun starts!!

I always believe if you are going to throw stones at others, YOU have to expect a few back, just suck it up!

regards

Ian

Just look at the bickering on a "Be nice" thread. Just a reminder.

From my observations over almost 30 years of extensive internet use and since well before there was a World Wide Web it is the "bickering" many, if not most, people follow forums such as this for; and I include a lot silent observers in that.

Phil Allison and Rob Speed, two of the most contrary people it's possible to meet (if people they were), use to have fan clubs on Usenet!

Just noticed another topic has suffered the big padlock. 3rd one for this year.

https://thegreynomads.activeboard.com/t68132562/a-state-of-emergency/?page=2

I wonder was it the pic of the two fellas with the unusual appendages biggrin biggrin or was it the personal attack from one member on another.

Lets run with the OPs suggestion.

Vince56 said this in the first post here.

Keyboard warriors not welcome I say.

If someone says something stupid like "China is manipulating the Milankovitch cycles", what is the correct response?

I thought my reply to your quote in the now locked topic pretty much sums it up.

It is fairly obvious that it is your intention to provoke unnecessary argument even by deceit on this forum.

 X 1 Rob.

To me his intention is very clear.

From being a member on a few forums I recon that there is nearly always a professional stirrer who has a skill to be able to provoke an argument.

From what I see there is one or two that offer no advice to the caravanner in any of their posts but have the purpose of dragging up controversial subjects or taking someones post and making an attack on the person based on something taken out of subject by cutting and pasting. I think they just enjoy an argument.

We certainly have a few on here at times.

I hope 2022 can be a kind year for everyone. We have enough to cope with due to our current pandemic.
