Ah The Wedge Tail Eagle , a beautiful bird of prey but unfortunately you don't see them all that often.
Saw one couple of months ago, near Winton. It had just gone through the driver's side windscreen of a Mack Roadtrain.Dead Wedgetail and dead windscreen.Cheers
When we moved to Mount Barker, a neighbour said we had a wedge tailed eagles nest in the remnant bush at the back of the block, and they return every 2 years.
Took me ages to find it (4 acres of bush) but it's huge, one day an eagle landed just outside the front fence, and hovered around for about 5 minutes. See a few every summer.
They also use to take children up to the age of 10 back around 300 years ago, that's why they were heavily hunted by the Australian inhabitants back then.
In 2011 we got to Kununurra and went to the tourist info centre and received a welcome pack . It contained a WA map, a bag for firewood, heavy duty gloves (still in caravan) long handled tongs to pick up road kill ,a heavy duty bag for roadkill. But the best freebie was a beautiful sticker that stated " Stop for a wedgie" showing a wedgie taking flight from road kill. Iconic and well treasured.
I had the pleasure of holding a wedge tailed eagle on my arm a few years ago at a bird sanctuary. Most birds feel relatively light when they are on your arm, but not the wedgie! He weight a ton and made my arm ache after a while. An absolutely beautiful bird both up close and in flight!
