I remember being horrified when, on a trip Melb to Perth, the first year the road was bitumened all the way across, it was $1 a GALLON at Nullabor Roadhouse. Ah, those were the days !!
we go twice a year mostly now and again an extra trip ,,,,,,we use travel auction if possible and stay 10 days at a time where ever ........the price of fuel will make lots more free camp i guess ......its always been a money spin for the fuel mobs to charge what they like ......it will mean less traveling around when we arrive at our destination so less money at country towns will be spent .........
Won't change our plans, we certainly have saved the past couple of years by not being able to travel and going to make up for that now! Prices have always fluctuated, we paid on average around $1.80 per litre on a 4 month trip through WA in 2014, in 2018 we did almost the same route and diesel averaged $1.55 per litre.
Saved money by being stuck in WA the past two years, paying a bit more for fuel is not going to change things greatly. We still use our van about the same amount but the long trips have been to the Kimberley instead of the East Coast.
Share market has been very kind over the last 12 - 18 months also, so there there is more money to spend in the super.
Swings and roundabouts.

We've decided to travel less each day, ~100 km instead of 200 to 300, not because of the increasing fuel prices but because we want to relax more and look around a bit more in one place. However, that should also reduce our weekly fuel cost.
In Melbourne last year the price of unleaded was 48c ltr in a couple of places in the northern subs, here in Greater Geelong area it can vary as much as 40c per ltr at times, I hardly ever buy from the local outlets as it's always up to 20c ltr higher than if I buy it closer to Geelong wahoo for petrolspy
As I will be fulltime traveling the price of fuel doesn't really matter as I will just spend more time camped than driving, for me it's about the journey not getting from A-B
The price of fuel won't make much difference to our plans. We have already decided to do less driving and more staying wherever we go. If I could afford it, I'd buy an EV and cover it with solar panels...
Simple... Our view is you are not going anywhere unless you fill up with fuel.
On our last trip to outback Queensland this year, we never worried re the fuel price.
But, having said that we did try to fill up where ever the fuel was the lowest cost.
Would not have a clue as to the fuel cost for the 3000 klm's trip.
It is all part of the experience of enjoying our great country.
F.Y.I. the 2-month trip was evenly split between free camping and cost camping. We recorded where we spent each night and the cost was $415 equate to an average of less than $8 per night.
We did a lot of bush camping.
Happy days
