Just came across caravan rollover and the elderly couple are ok i heard. They were travelling south down hill. Ended up on the edge on the North bound lane. Tragic end to their travells. A reality check for sure. Cheers Stewart

Yeah,something strange there,as van is not too big,and car is D-Max,which is a solid,long wheelbased model that can safely tow a caravan up to about 3000kg ATM. As you say,it would be good if we were able to learn of the reasons for this falling over.Perhaps the owners,like so many caravanners,had little understanding of the importance of correct weight distribution? Perhaps the accident was caused by the two-tier solar panel on the front left? Cheers

Yes i dont know how it happened i heard it on the UHF as we got closer. I did not see the event. But i see the roof is severaly scratched so it looks it was a complete roll over. Maybe someone might have dashcam. Cheers Stewart
According to the Townsville Bulletin, "the rig was travelling south toward Ingham & was prevented from rolling down a steep ravine by the guard rails. It came to rest on the north bound lane." The photo shown in the paper indicates it was near a bend to the left.
Nothing further other than the "elderly" passengers sustained minor injuries. Note "elderly" people up here are over 65 years old!!
As yobarr said, loading is a major key - this is a new road but care needs to be taken at all times. It is far safer than the old one but it is far easier to "go faster" now!
My guess would be that the car was travelling a bit too fast, in the wrong gear (the dealerships say to tow in "D") & the tail wagged the dog.

Zig when he should have Zagged ? Not a good balance and a little swerve is ALL it needs . Especially if your not 100% concentrating!
And not 100% experienced,or even 100% competent.How many people spend their lives driving nothing bigger than a Corolla,retire,buy the big flash car and van,and set sail to do "The Big Lap".And it all ends in tears.Not suggesting that this is the case here,but perhaps a special licence should be required to tow a trailer above 750kg,with restrictions on weight of van versus weight of car,like the restrictions we have for "P plate" drivers in Turbo cars? This might protect people from themselves,but already I can hear the howls of protest from the "I've been driving for 60 years,and never had an accident" brigade! Probably caused a few,but never been involved in one.If safety is of anybconcern, always the weight on the wheels of the car should be at least 10% greater than the weight on the van's wheels.Cheers

Interesting! Looks to me that the car has gone R Sover at least once,as evidenced by the destroyed roof,but the van has simply fallen onto its side, as there appears to be no damage to its roof edges? This would suggest that a DO35,or similar,was being used.Cheer

I totally agree yobarr any one that has not at least held a MR license should have some driver training with any rig over 4 ton also its surprising how many can not reverse a caravan it should be mandatory.

Not pushing the licence argument either way, yes or no, but if a licence is required or legislated, then ALL drivers wishing to tow a trailer/caravan should be required to do it, no matter what other licences they hold.
Why suggest that? Well all I ever read is how a caravan/car combination is completely different handling wise to either a rigid truck, or an articulated truck, due to the trailers dynamics. As such, everyone should be trained in them.
As many say, licensing does not guarantee better outcomes, but one in, all in as far as I am concerned. That is based on the fact that many who talk about having a towing licence seem to exclude themselves from its requirements due to holding some higher licence.
