Been to Bingara?.

With lockdown hopefully ending in October , i am planning a trip to Bingara,  a  write up in recent caravan magazine painted a very rosy picture  of the town and  surrounds. My questions do they currently have a mouse plague? what are the local van parks like ?  Is there much fishing in the local river? OR would it be better to stay out at Copton dam .

Bingara is a real gem in the New England's crown. Bingaras fishing paradise is probably one of the best kept secrets in the angling world. Thanks to more than 20 years of restocking by the local Hatchery, the Gwydir and Horton rivers have great populations of Murray cod and Yellow Belly (golden perch). There is easy access onto the river upstream from the town for a distance of some 10km.

Copeton Dam is renown as a top Murray Cod, Golden Perch, Silver Perch, Redfin & Eel-Tailed Catfish fishery with possibly a remnant trout from past stockings.
Rainbow Trout are still taken in Gwydir River downstream of Copeton Dam.
Upstream of the lake is some pristine gorge country that holds the odd Cod & Yellowbelly. It is rugged country being more suited to goats (which there are alot in the area) than to people but can be rewarding at times for those that are keen & fit enought to traverse the boulders and cliffs. The river below the Dam holds some trout & is also a popular white water rafting location during water releases.

Edit; Currently no mice in plague proportions due to cold.

Bingara is a great place to camp/ holiday. It has one van park, everything you need, also excellent free camping on both sides of the river, no toilets.

Dump point outside the swimming pool near van park.

Couple of pubs and RSL for meals, great IGA  and they appreciate travellers.

Good 9 hole golf course beside the River, a recently refurbished club house with Chinese restaurant.

We return there every year, love it.

Cheers,

Chris.
