Like many we struggle to stay under our max van weight (GVM).
So Im thinking of getting a foam mattress to replace the inner spring one. (Queen size I think) Will reduce our (GVM) by I think about 15kg and help making the bed a little easier.
Have a look at Thermarest, they are expensive, we have had them for decades. Currently using 75mm Luxury Map. It's very good. If we had the room, would go for even more luxury!

We bought a foam mattress (often called a mattress in a box) not to reduce weight but to get a good nights sleep. I think it was around $900. Once we struggled to get the old mattress out of the caravan it was easy to replace with the new. Just take the box inside and open it inside and the mattress slowly expands to its full size.

Currently have no idea of cost, or their quality.
Thoughts, experiences? Pros, cons?
Hi Neil.Early on in setting up my van,and before I bought a HEAVY latex mattress,I did a bit of research into this subject.Latex allows you to lie ON the mattress, wheras, with foam, you lie IN the mattress, resulting in higher temperatures, and much perspiring! Personally,I never would go past Latex, but it is plurry heavy! As an aside, caravans have their all-up weight referred to as ATM,with the term "GVM" being applied to powered vehicles.Cheers
There previously was a foam supplier near us that supplied material for any commercial application including mattresses. He showed me his samples to show that there were several things to determine the quality of the foam. There are grades of softness and even dual layers used in caravans. As well as this the life is determined by the size of the foam holes so that a fine foam will last longer separate to the softness of it.
My suggestion would be to investigate a direct supplier for information. This shop had samples of each type to show the difference.
Hospital beds use foam or latex mattresses, and they are designed to be cleaned. You can buy a used bed for $100 or less. Sometimes they are given away.
My father has recently gone into aged care. His hospital bed may be needed by my mother in the future, but after that ...

We had the problem in our little Golf 390 of a fold up inner spring mattress in the fold out bed which had a hard edge along the join which hurt the sleeper down the whole length of their body. We bought a trifold foam queen size mattress from Clark Rubber which we could position with the folds going cross wise to the sleeper. There were no hard edges along the two fold lines and it is easier to fold up when closing the fold out bed. It is even more comfortable than the inner spring mattress, which was on the firm side. The foam mattress is about 10cm thick.

Do you find it hot to sleep on.?
I actually find it very comfortable to sleep on, which is surprising as I usually hate foam mattresses. The push out bed is surrounded by canvas and mesh windows so maybe this keeps me cooler.
