Pin holes in carefree awning

Evening forum members, 

On rolling out carefree awning as a pre-trip check, we (the wife) noticed some pin holes in the fabric. I think I read, some time in the past, that you can use liquid paper to fill the holes?

If not, can I smear a small dap (smoothed out) of wet area clear silicon, sikaflex or seam stitching sealer. I am trying  to stay away from using patches if possible!

I believe in the USA the have a liquid patch product, I can find any available in Aus. Do we have a similar product available in OZ and where can you purchase it.

As in previous post thanks for all or any advise/ suggestions.

If you go back an read any of my previous posts that I made, which I know you have, you will note that I generally close my posts in this manner or similar: its to thank people for reading the post in the first instance and also in the hope of advise.

You would have noted that when I do receive a reply, that I have always responded and thanked the members who have taken the time to reply to me. If you go back on this forum and also another, I have had the courtesy to thank you when you gave me advise on issues: on this and the caravaners forum.

I used a drop of Araldite to plug a pinhole leak in an inflatable dinghy and it lasted for years until I spilt petrol on it. I'm sure it would do the job on a vinyl awning and be virtually invisible.

I had the same problem with our new van. Noticed 3 pin holes on 1st attempt at putting awning out (Carefree). Fortunately, replaced under warranty.

These should have been noticed on assembly by manufactures!!

Thanks for the tip Are We Lost,

Ill try it on one hole first to see how it handles being rolled. There one about 2-3ft from roller end this will be the tightest end.

Totally agree with you Dick, 

Ours is only 4 year old, insurance replaced it after a storm. Holes may have been there from new and havent noticed!

We experienced similar problem with Dometic Awning - Pin hole leaks in brand new awning - My personal opinion is van owners are being supplied sub standard vinyls by manufacturers maximising profits.

I've successfully patched matchstick size holes with silicone; a slight dab on either side. It's flexible, has good adhesion and stands up to all manner of weather conditions. However, it does discolour over time.

Totally agree possum, profit before customer satisfaction.

warranty is only there too let you know how long its going to take manufacture/supplier too acknowledge receiving your claim only not acting on it.

I give a couple of holes a try with silicone, I presume external guttering type silicone would hold best.

I wouldn't use a hard glue on fabric awning. I used a fair bit of glue for years & would get drops on clothes accidentally. Months later the fabric would break around the edge of the glue.

Silicone is flexible. Probably best if it's a low acid type.

 

What about tent seam sealer, it's probably silicone based, probably worth looking at. At least for research purposes.

I used this to repair some delam's and pin hole, for the pin hole I cut out 2 circles approximatle the size of a 20 cent piece, cleaned the area around the pin hole with metho and applied over the out and inside of the awning, done similar with the delam's went but laid the tape approximatly 4" before and after the delamination.

Hey Gundog l used that tape also for a tear and it lasted till my awning finally met its maker.
