I am not a medical expert, but I am sure that I read (many years ago)

The blood will absorb CO better (or quicker) than it absorbs oxygen

Eventually, with the blood full of CO, the body is deprived of oxygen, and dies

Perhaps a medical informed member can elaborate, or say that this is another bit of misinformation

Carbon monoxide primarily causes adverse effects by combining with hemoglobin to form carboxyhemoglobin (HbCO) preventing the blood from carrying oxygen and expelling carbon dioxide as carbaminohemoglobin.
