My immediate thought is, what will break if and when I decide to upgrade, or am forced to upgrade? Will my old machine(s) be able to satisfy the new hardware requirements? How long will Win 10 continue to be supported?

Windows 8, 8.1 is exactly why I changed to a Mac.

Loved Windows 7 pro. Forced to update to 10 as some programs now not supported by 7. Absolutely hate 10. Microsoft has become like a virus in recent years. A blight on the computer industry.

Think I read somewhere 10 will be supported until 2025.

As I said I'll continue with 10 for the foreseeable future,I don't have any issues with it, it  still runs Office 2007 without problem, Word and excel as well as Outlook which is a great email facility, no need to upgrade to Outlook 365 an expensive subscription service.

My current machine has less then 15gb left, not enough for Edge, which, I wont allow to update to, so I supposed they will demand to load W11, which, I well have to fight over them with on their forced update.. As I have previously said, this is the last computer I am going to have, unless I win one with 6000 TB of memory.

It all depends on how you are using your computer. I was a semi pro photographer. I heavily edited images. Still do. Many image files were over 500meg. My 9 year old laptop running Win 8.1 works fine. My old desktop runs Win 7. I only use it for printing. But all computers need to be 'managed' well or it's all downhill from the day you buy them. Waaaayyy back in the 80's I studied for a certificate, diploma and degree all specialising in computers. The most important lesson zi learned was to manage your computer. Win 7, 8, 10 or 11 will work well if you know their limits and your own limits. Me? I'm staying with Win 8.1.

 Your right, house keeping is crucial.

Like you I have large numbers of .jpg and raw images on my drives (literally thousands) mainly on the desk top machine, along with Photoshop for editing, regardless storage has never been an issue, I don't use the cloud, don't trust the system, prefer to keep my own files and back up.

PS We started our computer journey around 1982 on a Commodore 64 using floppy discs, makes you appreciate just how far we've come in a relatively short space of time.

take it one step further. Software. The 5 of them 'have to have' Excel etc etc etc to be compatible. More costs. I have sat down with them and shown them Open Office. Opened up their files, modified them and saved them. All in a free bit of software. But dare they try to save money? No way because the system says the MUST have this or that.

Now us old farts can manage. But the daughter teaches at a public school. Many of the students are disadvantaged. 'Poor' parents. Single parents. etc etc etc. The school has some loan devices but they are limited. So is our education system fit to teach our kids? Or is all about keeping up with technology and bugger the kids?

Rant over. I really feel for those who can't afford the basics to educate their kids.


Santa I started with a computer that loaded software from a cassette tape. 32k of Ram and 32k of Rom. 1980. But I could play Hangman with it !!

I agree, as far as kids are concerned it's gotta be the latest and greatest, I think a lot of it has to do with peer pressure, if they don't have the latest technology thet cop a lot of flak from their so called mates.

Ha! had forgotten about the software on cassettes, if I remember rightly Realistic (Tandy) was one of them, the good old days.

I was studying at what is now Deakin university. They had a mainframe that we used. Punch cards! When we had spare time we again played Hangman. Can you imagine using a universities mainframe to play Hangman?

I don't think the school system is based on peer pressure from the other kids. Maybe a bit. No it comes from the top down. As I mentioned our son inlaw is a teacher at an expensive private school. Half his time is spent rewriting the curriculum. He is in charge of f$#@^ with what the kids learn. (Invasion day etc). He is adamant that the new technology is the key. MUST have Apple and anything other than Apple is crap. School gets a deal with Apple. So go figure. Daughter at the public school gets their instructions from the state education system.

Back to Win 10-11. My question is WHY? Why can't we keep the HQ Holden. It served us well. Why can't we just put new wheels on it and a set of extractors? Win 8.1 was as good as it gets. (For its time). Why can't they just give us patches that upgrade it only if we want to? Can't we just speed up the hardware and leave the software alone? Give us options. Not some conspiracy that ensures that Apple and Microsoft have a continual source of income by simply making what we have obsolete for no real good reason. It's a conspiracy.

It not just Apple or Micrsoft. When the federal gov released their covid app it only worked on newer devices. Only after some uproar from users. Mainly old folks. That they changed the app to run on older devices. Mostly Android. The companies are full of kids who think they know what's best for us. They don't grasp the concept of folks, us older folks, aren't hell bent on the latest and greatest.

As Dorian said - it will depend on how long W10 is supported. Nominally they stay around for about 10 years.
After that, if you're satisfied with what you have & keep your anti-virus, malware detectors current then you could keep going as is.

It's like what some want to do with mobile phones - I'm happy with 3G but now I have to have 4G, 5G, etc!! It's a Conn to get us to buy more, more expensive equipment!!
