Does this Insurance cost sound right?

Just in the process of buying an '18 Toyota Prado for $53k, comprehensive insurance cost $640. for 12 months.

Also purchasing a secondhand year 2000 Coromal van for $19k, premium for 12 months through CIL, $702.

I am 70 years old with a perfect driving record, no fines, no loss of demerit points, no finance, no health issues

and with full non claim discount.

Can anyone suggest a cheaper insurance company for the van?

Cheers,

Wayne

G'Day Wayne,

Try where you got your Prado quote. I've just insured $58,000 worth (New) for $840.

I am with NRMA for my 10 year old van. I chose a $1,000 excess (higher than standard) and a value of $36,500, plus $1,000 contents. The premium was $582 10 months ago.

As a comparison.

Quote for a 2021 Iveco Daily van cost $84k

Full comp, maximum no claims. Allianz $1500

New caravan Only C.I.L will quote.

New caravan cost $94k $1800.

Two other companies (big companies) would not quote on the caravan because it was over $80k

$3300 just for 12 months insurance on nothg vehicles.

That sounds high for a $19k van - try RACV.

I have a Land Rover, seem to pay more for the privilege! Maximum no claim, no loss of excess & $650 excess.

Anyway. Last year another car hit me & the other driver lied & as I could not prove it was their fault I had to pay the excess. First time this has happened.

Get dashcams!

Money was not the issue, I just hate f.....g liars. I bought 4 dashcams, front, rear & sides.

It's not happening again!

P.S. I have bought 2 spares in the meantime, which I may double up front & rear.

I got SanDisk 256GB high endurance cards for $70 each from Techbuy which I have used for many years.

Mike, if you don't mind me asking, who did you insure your van through?

Many thanks

Hi Wayne

I used RACV this year. When insurance comes around I usually phone AAMI and RACV and take the cheaper of the two. Unfortunately I cannot remember the cost but it was less than $1k (about $800 sticks in mind) with a $1k excess for a van worth $55k.

I go for the $1k excess because I figure if I need to claim on the insurance it's probably going to be a big claim and then $1k is not much in the scheme of things.

Someone else mentioned CIL and I hear good things about them. It's a bit of a gamble, Cupie had a terrible time with NRMA who I would have expected to be good.

Van insurance quite frankly is ridiculously high considering that many van's are used for only about 6 months of the year and their exposure time on the road is limited. Our van was $830 last year for a $57,000 value. That is with APIA. I did get a cheaper quote from RACWA but we had had a claim with APIA which they were very good with and so stuck with them. Silly though when I get all of my 3 cars insured through Shannons for $1600 per year with a combined value well in excess of my van.

Im with RACV, $52K insured for $525, $1K optional excess, no annexe cover, $1k agreed contents cover. I have never made a claim on caravan insurance over many years so have no claim bonus also.
