We stayed at Kakadu Lodge. Everyone will have opinions but seriously we enjoyed our stay there. Absolutely no problems. There were lots of people at the park shaped like a crocodile.
Loved all the sites of Kakadu. If its stinking hot go to the Jabiru Sports Club. Cool spot for a cold drink.
We stayed in both of the cheap camp grounds, so can't comment on caravan parks. Be prepared for mosquitoes. We had to be in our screen enclosure by 5pm. They were queuing outside, billions of them. Daytime was ok.
Pick up one of these from Halls Creek IGA on the way through. Unfortunately we were going the other way!
You should get into the Lodge. It is a pretty sizeable park and very pleasant.
Quite shaded so there's a fair chance you will get a shady spot.
Good luck with seeing the sights. The management of Kakadu had not opened half the roads up when we were there in the height of the tourist season, so what was available to us at the time was very limited.
It has been on the news recently that they are wanting more funding from the Federal government and have closed off a lot of the park again until they get it.
We were quite disappointed with Kakadu to be frank. I think if you can get in to see some of the spectacular country, then it might be different, but under current management they are not going to have large volumes of tourists for much longer. Jabiru itself is exceedingly run down and tied and really needs a refresh.
Litchfield National Park was better imho, and didn't involve such a long trip in.
Agree with Greg in that you can almost guarantee great sights in Litchfield. If you have time to do both, I feel Kakadu is more traditional and Litchfield more picturesque. And yes, front up to the Lodge, youll 99.9% get a site.
Tony on our way to Kakadu from Darwin we stayed a night at the Mary River Wilderness CP, we then stayed 2 nights at the CP in Jabiru itself which was closer to Ubirr Rocks etc. then we stayed a final night at the Cooinda CP so we could do the last Yellow Waters cruise of the day and catch the sun setting over the billabong. If I remember all the CPs may not have been 5 star but they had all the necessary facilities, pool etc. dont be too surprsed about the bugs you get them everywhere in the tropics. We stayed at the CP in Batchelor which is just outside of Litchfield - only comparison I would make between Kakudu and Litchfield is that it can be a fair distance between points of interest in Kakadu. If you do decide to visit Kakadu don't forget to pay your fees at the park headquarters while in Jabiru or like us you may end up backtracking 50kms from Ubirr Rocks to do it. Coming from the south if you follow the Kakadu Highway you will do a loop with Cooinda Waters being your first port of call then Jaburu and then Mary River, East Alligator River etc. on the way back towards Darwin. I dont know if parts of Kakadu are now closed but Yellow Waters and Ubirr Rocks in my opinion are the must sees and really not something that you are going find in Litchfield which is probably more about picturesque waterfalls and swimming holes.

Trying to compare Litchfield and Kakadu is a bit silly, in my view. They are entirely different places.
If you have just 3 days, go to Litchfield. If you are smelling the roses and have more time to explore and discover, Kakadu has much more to offer. It does have a World Heritage Listing.
There are a couple of camp grounds in Litchfield suitable for caravans. In Kakadu there are a couple of dozen.
Cheers,
Peter
You had been very helpful. We have decided to go to Litchfield National Park as we have only 3 nights available. We will visit Kakadu at some other time.
