Can anyone tell me how to changeout the battery in my Breaksafe 6000 system. I am assuming that it is the internal battery that is shot as no matter how long I leave it in charge, the the test light stays on red when pressed. Additionally there is a slight buzzing sound coming from the box.
You need to remove the front of the unit and the battery will be exposed. There are a couple of clips at the side you must release first. Take care with the wire polarity when reinstalling.
A buzzing sound would concern me that the unit is faulty. Swapping the battery is probably the easiest way to test it, but maybe you could charge the battery when out of the case and see if it holds that charge, or if the unit buzzes when the battery is full.
Note that (assuming yours charges via the trailer plug) you may not be able use a battery charger at the trailer plug. The unit would have a diode to prevent vehicle discharge, and this may prevent your battery charger from working.

I was able to recharge our break away battery recently after a silly incident.
On the front of the break safe unit is a red and black knobs, I hooked up to these and bingo full charged but time will tell if I have destroyed the battery.
I only think at this stage the humming sound will go.
If the battery is more then a few years, get a new one.

Ours, (different brand) was mounted where an an orangatang could not get to it. Finally did, so made a little ply box and a strap, now on top of house battery and easy to see and check.

Like yours ours is positioned in a location by a design idiot that is almost impossible to access.
I was wondering if there is a simple way to by pass the whole brakesafe unit and run the breakaway directly to the caravan battery.
Same problem, flat battery, awkward placement, plenty of 'release the clips' suggestions all without anyone (INCLUDING THE MANUFACTURER ) explaining how.
So after a lot of bending and searching with a bright torch I now know how. And unlike all the prior, useless internet posts I have drawn pictures so that anyone will be able to replace the battery, even in low light.

Note - my unit has the 'ON CHARGE' LED permanently lit so it must have an internal connection to the black wire from the house battery bank. But after 10 years it's now too low to be a safety device, it would be lucky to hold the brakes on (weakly) for 10 seconds. I measured 10.5V at the terminals which is dead flat (12.2V is half capacity, 12.7V is full), and it wouldn't take any charge on, even after 24 hours trying.
