I know a few like the nappy treatment products but they have never worked for me. I have tried many different products but always come back to the Thetford Blue sachets or the Green Liquid if emptying into Septic. Has worked every time now for 9 years.

Sodium percarbonate (generic nappy soaker).
Couple of teaspoons to start when the cassette is empty and 1 more for each #2, added dry.
Safe to dispose of anywhere including septic systems.

Alternatively install an S.O.G and you won't need any chemicals at all.
Cheers,
Peter

I agree, with the exception that I reverted to the Portasol product.

But I do keep a container of  'nappy soaker'  as a back up & to clean stained coffee cups.

Oh yes, SWMBO uses the 'nappy soaker'  for removing stains from clothing.  Funny that.

Edit2.. Portasol not Portaloo correction

I have been using Super Cheap Autos, Portable Toilet Chemical for the last few years.

Normally around $45.00 for 5 litres; and use 50ml per tank for no 1's; 100ml for the no 2's.

Regards.

Hetho.

 Agree with Dougwe.

Currently trying the above from sca. Seems better than nappy san but only used a few days at this stage. Cost about 30c a day

https://www.supercheapauto.com.au/p/sca-sca-portable-toilet-additive---5-litre/381932.html

Edit: they recommend 100ml for 15 ltr tank. 3 to 4 days. Which for us pretty much fills the 15 ltr tank.

Hmm - prices for a SOG for my particular toilet installation is just over $250 to just under $300. And that is fitting it myself.

I have to ask, is that cost worth it? Other than that I'll continue using the 'nappy san' type with a dash of (full strength) eucalyptus oil.

Sodium percarbonate = Nappysan = 33% or so.

If you use commercial preparations (Thetford etc) *DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES DUMP THEM INTO BUSH COMPOST TOILET SYSTEMS!*

Yes Mike - I always look for 33% on the container, even though it is often hard to find on the label.

Murray...you ask "Is that cost worth it?"? This is a non-event as the SOG is so simple. No smell,so simple, and no chemicals,so with no ongoing costs you soon will recover  your miserable $250 "investment"?Hardly a day's pay,and no ongoing costs.Just do it! Cheer

Thanks Yobarr - I'll certainly consider it. The most obvious advantage would be not having to 'load' up the cassette again after each time it is emptied - just slide it back in.

About ten years to cover the cost of sodium percarbonate I reckon. Do those fans last 10 years?

If you buy the SCA brand it would talk 833 days to pay for a $250 SOG
30c a day. Napu san would be a lot cheaper.

Edit: IMO If people are worried about 30c a day, I question if they can afford a van.

Far better ways to save a few dollars.

I have just become aware of a 'hidden' cost of a SOG toilet installation. They require carbon filters costing just over $20.

Question: How often will the filters require changing?

The fact that they are sold as a separate item suggests that they are a 'consumable' and thus have a finite life requiring replacement.

Do the carbon filters take care of the odours? Where are they located.?

Chris and Sharyn,

For my setup (C200 cassette) the filters are installed in the hatch door together with the extractor fan. Of course, that makes the hatch door thicker.
It is claimed that the filters absorb the odors so do not blow the smells around outside to annoy passers by or other nearby vans.

Thanks Murray, how long have you had yours installed? Have you noticed any odours inside or outside.

Gooday,

We have a Thetford C200 Cassette and have had our Smell Orl Gone er fitted for over 10years, closer to 15 years. Best thing I ever did. Have a spare filter in a cupboard, have removed the original one and washed it a couple of times but that is it.

Paid $180-00 for it, was at a Cravan show in Brisbane, at the time when I went to the Aussie Traveller stand they were busy packing up and he only had the one left so I got a deal, was about $200 retail then.

Activated charcoal filters are designed to remove odours and only have short life span. Just left on your kitchen table they will continue to osorb various components. I imagine they wouid be next to useless after a few weeks.
Cant be cleaned either. Single use Disposable item.
