Travelling North for the Winter

Here I am in my nice comfy home down south.   I would dearly love to travel north for the winter as has been my custom for the last 10yrs.

But..  I don't want to go if I have to fill out forms to cross borders and take on the possibility of being caught up in a lock down. Perhaps even having a stay in govt provided quarantine.

What do you think my chances are?   Should I start making plans and get all excited or just sit still and fill in time?

msg,
About the same chance as we have got. We would like to see our daughter in SW Vic & son in Canberra - but we don't want to patronise our broke Qld Govt by being forced to stay in a flash hotel on returning!

Perhaps the vaccine will help??

MSG,

Unfortunately I think we will have forms and applications to make for some time yet for border crossings. I think unexpected lock downs are also going to stay for some time, as whatever our own thoughts on them are, the politicians of the day believe in them, and the apparent approval they bring from their constituents.

That said, Kathy and I are in the same boat. Forgoing our normal trip interstate in the middle of last year for a shorter but nice run around our home state of SA, I am determined to have a run interstate this year, as my read on the risk, especially staying in regional areas, is that we are quiet safe. That is improved as well, as we are willing to have the vaccine, as we see it no different than the flu, shingles or measles vaccines. They were new and untried once, and look at them now. My main concern on that point is as we are in the general population category, ie not over 65, no underlying health issues, not in aged care or the like, I am wondering when we will qualify for the injection, and what we need to do if we are away. We will sort it out.

So, my comment would be plan, have an option or two on where to head off to, be flexible once on the road, and if a lock down comes, then so be it, and make a decision then on your next actions. What I will say is if a lock down of a state comes while we are there, stopping us coming back, we will sit tight some where for a week or two to see if the lock down passes before we rush back to quarantine. We will consider the current medical information at the time, and not take any silly risks that endanger us or others. I say this as we are going to have Covid in the world for some time yet I suspect, and we will need to cope with it.

Incidentally we are planning this way, as we are getting no younger, and the years seem to have lost a month or two, as they slip away ever faster!

Just go. If there is a lock down and borders close, so what, you get to spend more time in qld. You will get home eventually. Life is for living, its not a rehearsal. Enjoy.

Just do it, life is too short and vaccinations will be available if you want it by then
Worst case would be locked into a state for probably only a few weeks and then "maybe" having to self quarantine when you go home.
There is a good chance there will be the "odd" lockdown in 2021, but they seem to get on top of things fairly quickly with these quick lock downs and then we get back to "normal" in a fairly short time.
Most outbreaks so far have been mainly in city areas, although it can effect the whole state, so if you keep away from major cities and built up areas it will probably be fine.
We certainly will be heading off in late June heading north, just need to be flexible and in no hurry
cheers safe travels

My opinion, is that as we are all different, living in different circumstances, it is hard to advise another person if they should/should not travel

I can only use myself as an example

Until we are in some sort of normal, or at least until I have had my Covid-19 vaccinations, I shall not be crossing state borders

When I do cross borders, then I shall have to abide, by whatever (unknown today) rules will apply tomorrow

Until we get on top of Covid-19, I expect border closures/travel restrictions, to appear at any time, at any place, without much (if any) notice

I shall plan to have a few spare dollars, so that if I have to go into lockdown, I shall not have financial stress

On the other hand, none of us are getting any younger, so within reason, we may as well enjoy what we can, while we can

I think that I was a little misinterpreted.

I wasn't really asking for advice. I was asking more as a discussion question.

As you are all aware a lot of southerners travel north for the winter. "The Grey Nomad Season" in winter. Is it going to happen this year? What do you think?

or have all the businesses who organise events etc cancelled?

One thing I suppose, the backpackers will be scarce. How will this affect nomads. Less services?

Will there be many nomads wandering about or will most be home all tucked up?

Well we have waited long enough. We are leaving qld this week for sa and Vic. Politicians can do there best to bugger up whatever they like. We are going and will cross whatever bridge when or if we come to it.

We are staying home, but I may go mainly locally on the bike, with the new camper. I don't want to be interstate with the Pushy, as I am only an 80km a day rider, at the most, so being anywhere other than NSW would be unsafe.

Hi Msg,

We are going to give it a go. First over the the boarder via Broken Hill into SA for a spot of fishing form our tinnie. Then onto WA for a ten weeks stop For more remote fishing and long beach walks with our jack Fox. Will return the same way. If need to, we will hold up. We found an old soak that we can access with inline filtered 12v pump.

Our camping area in WA has had good rains in the last months.

You need to do your home work first. It can be a Very long return drive to get good water. We have a dip in the Indian ocean and rinse off with HW shower at days end.

We to have been locked up for allmost two years. It time.
