Pensioner faces $665 fine for taking crystal from Queensland national park

Pensioner faces $665 fine after being accused of taking crystal from Queensland national park:

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2021-02-08/bushwalker-faces-fine-over-queensland-crystal-find/13129054

"The Cairns resident said he was more than a little taken aback to receive a knock on his caravan door from two Queensland Parks and Wildlife rangers two weeks later, when he was issued with a notice stating he was being investigated for "actively fossicking for crystals" and therefore in breach of the section 26 of the Wet Tropics Management Plan."

Now I know where all the Rangers have gone. Sitting in front of computers.

I have not seen a Ranger in Sydney Harbour NP for 5 years & we walk there twice a week. No dogs allowed in the park but the rangers are too lazy to patrol the place.

Things are getting crook in Tallarook when you can't even pick up a rock and keep it. Its the language in the last paragraph that disturbs me though.

" In a statement, Queensland's Department of Environment and Science confirmed they were investigating an offence in relation to "interference with natural resources" and could not comment further as the investigation was ongoing.

It said rangers monitored social media accounts to identify and investigate alleged "noncompliant activities."" Noncompliant? A socialist term?

No  it is a term used by police and lawyers throught the country.

However it is petty to the extreme. Particularly given the utterly disgraceful condition of many of our NPs. IMO the NP management should be charged with failing to discharge their duties. As I look around the NPs and SFs I'm constantly disgusted in the way they are treated by the current and past governments. I now believe National Parks seem to have a "do nothing" policy.

Well, naturally... I'd expect everyone to be aware of and familiar with the contents of the Wet Tropics Management Plan....

If the finder of the crystal denies he picked it up inside the national park boundaries, what case has anyone got against him?
Cheers,
Roy.

Same deal with moving rocks to make a fire ring in a national park.

Something does not sound quite right here, so I will not make any judgement

The rangers are also not telling their part of the story, due to them not commenting due to etc, etc, and etc, which may make them look like fools, in the near future

I thought that not everyone believed, what they had read on social media, as some people are known to exaggerate

Hopefully the old age pensioner, will have a good outcome, if not, then there may be some concrete evidence against him

I'm wondering whether the authorities are just using this poor man's case as publicity to ward off potential fossicking activities by the general public. I can see why a "crystal rush" in the national parks wouldn't be in anyone's interest.
