Registering a motorhome vs a truck

All I know is that it is much cheaper reg. as a motorhome.

The RTA has a technical phone line that you can ask information from. They will tell you what are the requirements for getting it registered as a motorhome. Then you will need to get an engineers certificate to change it. That engineer will also tell you exactly what he needs to see. The list of approved engineers is on the web site and that phone number. aww However I doubt that a slide-on will qualify unless it is deemed to be mounted permanently and not removable.

I suggest you spend some time on the web site looking at the rules first. It is convoluted information to go through however. But most service NSW sites do not have a technical person there to answer these questions but some do if you are lucky. hmm

All motorhomes in Australia require SSM compliancing. (Second Stage Manufacturing) and a second stage plate is affixed to the vehicle that is Type Approved..
I doubt a slide on would qualify for SSM because it is removable.

Varies from State to State.
We had a slide-on on a Ford F350 4WD. It was registered as a truck.
We fixed it permanently to the vehicle (in the late 1990s) and it was then registered as a motorhome at a much lower cost.
No second stage approval was required, but if it was, this is a simple job for an approved engineer and would not cost much.

In ACT rego is charged on weight. Up to 3500kg is car and you pay the rate for a car and you can drive it with a car licence.

EG My Transit Van is the same cost as my Falcon.

There may be a difference in private & commercial rules and the number of passengers allowed to be carried.

Other than this I'm not sure about. Don't get too excited, ACT rego is expensive. No inspections required except on initial registration and you pay third party from a list of preferred providers.

Hi Jason What is your truck? I suggest you shop around some more or use a really good broker. The issue may be what classification of use they used for insurance rating your truck. There is no slide on motorhome category of use for trucks with the main commercial truck insurers. I had to shop around many of the various potential other uses for a truck to find the cheapest vaguely applicable one.
