What do you base your historical facts on Wizardofoz the earliest known sandals were found in a 5000 year old Egyptian tomb. They were a common type of footwear in the ancient world with the original Japanese sandal being made of wood.  As kids we also called thongs Japanese work boots, hanging around with your mates you either wore them or went barefoot. 

I still reckon that the greatest break through in thong technology was the Dunlop double pluggers..
