No you can do without one. If you are free camping a 20 litre bucket with a lid and a plunger through the lid makes for a bit of exercise and a reasonable enough washing machine for the basics. The rest waits until a stop in a caravan park.
My aluminium tent would have had one but when ordering had a bank of drawers put there instead. Good choice for me and never missed the machine.
I do a lot of washing by hand in a biggish plastic bucket that has a handle each side. I use wool wash as doesn't need rinsing.
Big stuff gets done in CVP or public laundromats. I always wipe out a public machine with a metho soaked rag and use a sanitiser in final rinse. I still use the wool wash then too as saves having both sorts.
Keep Safe on the roads and out there.

The best part of a washing machine is it's ability to spin excess water out of sheets and towels, even when hand washing - it can be utilised as a dirty clothes storage and a soaking tank even if not being used to actually wash clothes - main disadvantage of washing machines is the excessive water needed if put on to automatic setting.
