Have just recently purchased a van and am doing a few short trips at the moment. Am planning to Road Trip from Bairnsdale to Great Ocean Road and over to Adelaide in March.
Can anyone advise if you need to book ahead and how long you would spend sightseeing the towns from Barwon Heads to say Wye River.

Depends on when you are starting your journey/s really. If now, I think you will find most if not all places booked solid. Well worth ringing places in advance at any time to be sure to be sure. Even now, you never know.
If you haven't been on it already and to save going through Melbourne, head to the Mornington Peninsula and take a nice journey on the Sorento to Queenscliffe ferry. Due to Covid you might need to book though. Also and as well even, if you hop on the first trip across in the morning, either way it is a lot cheaper or was before Covid.

I'm not a fan of sightseeing the Great Ocean Rd with a caravan, the roads do not allow space to stop and view. It most probably would be best to prop the van in a caravan park and do daily sightseeing trips "Bob-tailed".

Welcome Ian - driving via Melbourne is no big deal if you choose the right day/time. Warnambool is a good place at the western end - Maritime Museum worth a look and from there you can day trip to lovely places like Port fairy. Not sure when Easter is next year but I'd avoid any coastal areas at that time - usually too busy and too expensive

The Great Ocean Road is a fantastic road trip, take your time and research the places you want to set up BASE CAMP, from which you can do your day trips, we have traveled this road many times and every time it's a totally different experience, we live in Melbourne and our first CV park is Anglesea, once set up it's a short drive back to Torquay or even Barwon Heads, you can visit Bells Beach which is between Torquay and Anglesea, then we stay at Lorne or go straight to Apollo Bay for a few days, after that it's on to Princetown, we stay at the Princetown Recreation Reserve, there is a nice walk along the Estuary to the ocean, it's really beautiful. For day trips it's a short drive to Port Campbell past the Loch Ard Gorge & Twelve Apostles, also west of Port Campbell there is lots to see, stop and have a look at The Grotto it's well worth it, then on to Warrnambool and Port Fairy, a nice spot to visit is the Tower Hill Conservation Reserve between Warrnambool and Port Fairy.
There is lots to see and enjoy so I hope you have plenty of time, gee I am getting the bug to head off that way again.
We have had friends that have done the trip a week ago and they said that the CV Parks are not busy at all but the prices are high so best check ahead negotiate the prices before booking.
