This old discussion again. As already suggested in our climate just start the engine, put the seat belt on, check the driving controls mirrors etc and gently go. Take it easy for some 5 minutes till the temp gets into the normal range or the cold light goes off, then proceed as normal. I believe that is now the recommendation for all new vehicles. Indeed my car say "do not let it idle for any time" biggrin

Bore washing is the most likely problem with a cold diesel and direct injection engines as all new vehicles are, will suffer more that the older indirect injection type. Indeed vehicles made for colder weather do have intake air heaters to help with cold starts to prevent this and ensure good combustion. But if the temp outside is not negative just start and drive IMHO.wink If it is negative then start and hold a fast idle for a minute til it sounds good, and even, and then proceed.

As for letting it idle for a long time pretending it is a Kenworth with two trailers on, that is just a joke. If you have slowed down and pulled over off the road then just turn it off. IMHOaww

 It takes another minute to turn off all the safety warnings in a car these days otherwise your head will explode with all the distractions!

This bloke might have a style you dislike, but he knows a bit about mechanical stuff. The thing is liking or disliking some one doesn't change the info.

Essentially, I agree with all he said.

Especially I agree with his statement "Do not thrash a cold engine" and on that basis I shall continue to let the engine idle for a minute or so and then take it easy for the next four or five minutes. That will do no harm....
