Longreach trip

Giday all,we intend doing a 3 week trip from moore park beach to longreach via Blackall and back via Emerald Rocky. Have been told that caravan parks and free camps are chocker on that route, anyone been out that way in the past week or two, could you let us know. Any info would be great Ken.

G'day Ken,

Give Ilfracombe CVP a ring. Great people running it and nice little park. Only 20 mins south of Longreach.

Keep Safe on the roads and out there.n

 Ken,

Yep Mate!!!! I would be surprised if you could get s site out at the Apex Park camp site on the Thomson River.

It is about 4 Klms to the west, but a busy site at anytime.

Good luck with your accom, and have a great trip.

We are currently dawdling along that route.

Yep there are lots of vans on the road & lots of ankle biters in the CPs.

After Cania Gorge we were booked into the CP at the dam at Emerald.  Pretty full but some vacant spots. Too dusty for us and dam at about 10% capacity with few redclaw for kayakers.  I'd stay in town.

Showgrounds at Jericho pretty full but still a few sites (P&water $15) available most days. Lots of space on the river in the free camp  Redbank.  I counted about 20 vans the other day with a similar number at the showgrounds.  The pub was shut most days & there was no one in their 'free' camp.

Currently at Ilfracombe.  Lots of sites availaibe daily & very few in the free camp behind the pub.  Perfect weather & the pub food is good too.  Better to stay there than Longreach IMHO.

The Winton CP rang us today to confirm that we would be there tomorrow for our booking as they had lots waiting to get in.

I think that if you want to stay in CPs then you will need to book ahead ASAP.

EDit   WRT Longreach ....  Not much choice of CPs there, but as we drove through yesterday although the park by the highway seemed to be well patronised there were spare spots & no queue up out front as we have seen in the past.  If you want to stay there book now.  As per  my previous comment, I would stay at Ilfracome and do the 25 or so km to Longreach as necessary.  A much nicer location.

We were up there 4 years ago and there was a large area approx 15 kms west of longreach not sure if its still there but much better spot than being packed in like sardines at the free spot on the river near town.

Cheers

3 minutes east of Ilfracombe is a free camp its a large disused airfield I believe. Dusty and no facilities but plenty of room and good for a night or two I have used it a couple of times. Landy
