Speeding fine

Now even I think this is over the top! Someone close to me who I will not name was recently booked in Port Augusta driving south out of the town leaving the 60 kmh Zone and driving into the 80 kmh zone. She was slowly accelerating after the 60 kmh sign to reach the 80 kmh limit when a Police Officer stepped out and booked her at 72 kmh in that zone. Over $400. Well with South Australia being owed over 3 million in outstanding fines I suppose it is an easy money grab. But give me a break, how come drug dealers and worse get nothing, yet fines should relate to the seiousness of the offence, how does this occur? I think this is totally wrong and the Government and the Police Department should look carefully at how they collect their monies to run the state. Signed An ex SA Police Officer. All I can say is be careful very careful!!!

Yeah, let's throw away all speed signs and let the crowd decide. With 3 mill in outstanding fines, it sounds like speeders and drug dealers are both getting away with no penalty even though they're chalk and cheese.

 Hi Kipper,

The facts please. We need facts about the plantiff. For the record, what does the said have a repeat of offences!

We to have been stopped at the same area and given a caushion with a good record. There is always two sides to the story. Sooooooo!

Yes, we don't need to be told, you see it every day, many, many people do it (start accelerating as soon as they can see the sign) but yes it is illegal. Must wait until the sign is passed, then accelerate.

Pay the fine.

The SA Police have always been the same. Regardless of the fact that you can see a higher speed sign in the distance, you are still in the lower limit's area.

The speed sign is a LIMIT - not a speed you HAVE TO DO in the shortest time! Even in parts of NQ, you can be booked in the same way. And the police up here are getting sick of people killing themselves, others on the road so if you want to protect your licence, slow down.

In WA, if a drunken copper destroys your life, the penalty is an $800 fine.

Its a favorite spot for them to set up a camera, has been for many years, I suspect would be one of the most profitable speed cameras in the state.

As you say easy to fall into the trap, on the outskirts of town, you feel like your out of Augusta and think right lets head for Port Pirie, the foot goes down and the camera does its work, cant argue, with em.blankstare

Over here in WA some time back police were setting up their cameras on the entry ramps to the freeways which was 70kmh and freeway was 100kmh.
Ridiculous trying to merge into 100kmh traffic when only doing 70kmh....

I drove through Snowtown in SA 10klm over the limit. The cop asked "Did you see the speed signs and what was my reason for speeding?"

I said I didn't see the sign and after driving a long distance I simply must not have been concentrating. This was years ago and well after the Snowtown murders.

But the fact is I was a Victorian with Vic rego.I thought I was a gonner for sure....right?

Surprisingly he said he could understand that, on long distances and thanked me for the honesty and let me off.

Maybe The knockers here will tell me I should have received a ticket and be correct, but that had to be 30 years ago and the only time I was ever let off in my life.

I have never forgotten the incident. Just saying they are not all bad cops in SA.

There is one of these 60 then 80 close to my home & I have seen the cops there, also at the 80 to 60.

I only accelerate once I reach the sign. There are a few too many people behind who try to push you on who obviously don't know the rules, & I have saved them a fine.

Another situation is the 40 work zones. I find the cruise control really useful in these situations & it has definitely saved me a few times. From memory the CC only goes down to 35.

Its something that a lot of us tend to do ,me included but the facts remain you must not exceed the posted speed limit . yes it seems harsh but rules are rules whether we agree with them or not .

I believe I read a while back, That in Victoria at least you can't be fined for breaking the speed limit within 200 meters of a change of speed limit singe.
Has anybody got any information on this. Landy.

Almost right.

Like other states the speed limit changes at the sign but police have stated they will, generally, not book people within 200m of the sign although I think they meant going from the higher to lower limit, I'm not sure what their policy is in regard to travelling from the lower to higher limit.

Thanks Mike I thought I had read that somewhere glad I wasn't imagining it. Landy

work zones are the worst signs left out after workers have moved on

Whilst I have been grabbed for 60 in a 50 zone 20 metres inside the 50 whilst pulling the van down from the 100 zone prior and thought the placement was a bit rough given I was doing 50 20 or so metres further on, at the end of the day, I should have been doing 50 by the sign. The thing that really annoys me is the placement of speed drop zones. You come barrelling around a bend at 100kph with a 5.9 tonne rig to be faced with a 50 zone 50 metres in front. Yes you can get pulled down if you jamb everything on but its not what I would call a safe stop. I would hate to be driving a 100 tonne road train. This is what happened when I got nabbed in a small country town. Said something to the copper but he wasn't interested. I had just brightened his boring day.

In WA not always. I notice that the eastern states are pretty good at doing that with a warning sign that there is a speed drop ahead. Good idea imho.

Easier to
Get money from people who
Own cars . Another thats by . There is a difference to driving over the speed limit to dangerous speed . We have been brain washed to think anything over the speed limit is dangerous ! I would take it to court and try to explain . Ive had many . So I just pay ! As I drive to conditions ! At times I have no idea what the speed limit is !! Especially when at work as emergency electrical linesman . In unfamiliar areas .

We are starting to get a bit off track here but one of my gripes with the Victorian speed limits is the distances between speed limit singes Like Aus-Kiwi said it is to easy to get into a situation were you don't know what the speed limit is, especially with so many hundred limits being dropped to 80. Agreed!

In the UK, outside towns, it is a legal requirement there be "repeater" signs not more than 500 yards apart. These are mini speed limit signs about 200mm diameter along the roadside and, I imagine, if missing one could use it as a defence.
