Petrol 4WD-non turbo for towing 2.5 t caravan-suggestions

Am concerned with all the problems I am reading about with pollution control on diesel motors. Do not want to go to the size of the Nissan Patrol. Any suggestions

A Discovery D4 5.0L V8 276kW 510Nm 3500kg towing.

A Freelander 2.0L Ford Ecoboost 177kW 340Nm but it has a turbo & only 2000kg towing.

 

You can get either for under $40k

Modern turbocharged engines should not hold any fears for a buyer. They have become very reliable. I have two turbo vehicles, one a petrol and one diesel. Both have proven to be very reliable. The main issue with modern diesel vehicles is not the turbocharger but the DPF and EGR clogging up. They do not like a lot of short trips which create the carbon build up. There are a number of fixes for this although some are not legal and would fail a yearly check.

Thanks Greg 1. Yes, it is the DPF and EGR that I am concerned about. Is your petrol turbo vehicle used for towing?

I throw in a Ford Territory 6 cyclinder petrol.

A great motor, very comfortable car to travel in and good examples for under $20 grand.

 Pretty sure that the only Territory that can tow over 2500kg is the AWD diesel? (2700kg) All others,from memory,are limited to 2300kg,so not suitable for 2500kg van. Cheers

 I looked at getting a Ford Territory.  Although they say in the specs that the towing limit is 2300kg, that's only if you get a "heavy duty" towbar.  The actual limit on the one I was looking at (which had a towbar) was only 1600kg (I think, something like that).  The towbar was a "standard" towbar.  Something to watch out for if you are looking at them.

 Thanks hufnpuf (Do you have a name or a gender?)...I was aware of that,but I didn't want to further confuse! Truth be known,I believe that the actual car itself is rated to tow 2300kg,but the factory towbar is not! Cheers

 Yes, that's right.  They put a "lesser" towbar on them.  You have to pay for a better towbar to take advantage of the full towing capacity.  I found it a bit misleading.  The car yard guy was trying to tell me the car in their yard could tow 2300kg, it was only my own research that found out the disparity between the towing capacity in the specs and the "real life" towing capacity on the car.

OP needs something gruntier anyway so it's not something that should affect him.

 Surely you don't suggest that the "car yard guy" was trying to mislead you? That wouldn't be right,would it? The OP,Ian,certainly needs something bigger,and I am helping him to get sorted,via PM,as I have with others.Cheers

 Not really, he was pretty clueless and indifferent. It was the manufacturer's specs I wasn't too happy about.  They should have disclosed that the standard towbar only had a lesser limit.  I could have bought that car and only found out later that it didn't have the towing capacity in the specs.

Sorry about that, missed that part of the post, I have a diesel terry but have the luxury of mostly towing with it, avoid using it as a shopping trolley, just use my ba ute to run around in, 2015 terry of mine does not have a d.p.f. turn key, wait few seconds for glow plugs to do there thing & then hit the starter, very enviromently unfriendly!  Hi John...thanks for response! Terry is a great little vehicle...I almost bought one.....but limited towing capacity."Very environmentally unfriendly" you suggest? Perhaps you might like to do a bit of research into the high levels of pollution caused by those ridiculous leaf blowers used by those who are too lazy to use a broom,and seem not to understand that blowing leaves onto the road is only effective until the next gust of wind brings said leaves straight back to from where they came.Too much thinking involved? Cheers
