Sullage connection

Hi,

just wondering if anyone else has a van with a 50mm sullage outlet? If so what sort of connector do you use to connect the standard 25mm sullage hose?

Regards Paul.

Do you have a top loader washing machine installed. These have a stack pipe, the outlet of the washing machine outlet pumps into. Any restriction, i.e. undersized hose could lead to an overflow inside the van. I have over come this, and can use a 25mm sullage hose.

Hi iana,
yes we do have a top loader installed. So is that why they have the non-standard sized outlet? How did you over come this?
Regards Paul.

I fitted these to my hose and outlet. Poly Camlock fittings www.ebay.com.au/itm/Cam-Groove-Coupling-Camlock-Quick-Connect-Water-Fitting-Polypropylene-Plastic/132017853129

I have one and use a grey, grey water hose from the big green shed, I think it is about 32mm. I use PVC fittings ie, 50mm to outlet with a reducer to the 38mm. I have also cut the hose to 2mt lengths and use the rubber joiners made for the hose. Not expensive and have been using same hose and fittings for 6 years now. I use silicone to seal anything that might need sealing.

If you take a peak at the pic in my last monthly update in 'Blogs' here on the forum you might be able to zoom into see what I mean.

Keep Safe out there.

Under the van, I fitted a surge tank, made from a 6" PVC sewer pipe, capped at both ends, so giving about 10 liters of holding space. The top of the tank, I cut a large hole, that the stack pipe fits into, but the hole is oversize, giving it about a 10mm opening about the stack pipe (you could just cut another hole in the top of the 6" PVC). Then the outlet of the 6" PVC, coming out at the bottom, via a hepro valve, is connected into the common drain system of the van, and fitted with a 25mm outlet.
So when the washing machine starts to empty, the waste can build up in the surge tank if the pipe work can't handle the flow. If the system becomes restricted, the washing machine waste will just overflow out the top of the surge tank and onto the ground.
We have done many washes as we are full time on the road, and the system works.

Thanks for the feedback. Possum & Dougwe, I'm a little concerned now with just adding a reducing connection, as iana has mentioned that the top loading washing machine may require the extra large outlet to prevent overflow. Hmmm, may need to contact the dealer, but not overly confident with the help I'll get from them considering past communications.

I think Jayco's come with a 25mm grey water outlet, and then a separate 32mm hose connection dedicated for the washing machine. Ours did but I couldn't be bothered carrying two sets of hoses, especially since the 32mm hose is quite bulky.

My outlet is also 32mm. We also have a top loading washing machine. The problem with camlocks is you cause a small restrictions at the join. There is no pressure involved so just need a convienient clamp. I use these. Work fine and very every to clamp on.

I have used a 40mm pool hose for several years, connections to join hoses at pool shop and connection to van Bunnings.

I have seen smaller ones clog up and nearly overflow into van.

Thanks everyone for the feedback. I'm thinking I'll just get some larger sullage hose to suit the outlet and get rid of the sullage hose I bought from Aldi, as when I have a closer look at it, the end connection goes down to about 15mm where the connection goes into the actual hose. So I don't think that going from a 50mm outlet down to 15mm is going to be a good proposition.

Thanks again.

Regards Paul.

That surely would be the understatement of the day? With a 90% (+/-) reduction in capacity,'fun' times would be had by all! Cheers

If you have a grey water tank then plumb the washing machine outlet into it but make sure you always open the grey water outlet when using the Washing  machine.

Thus you can attach a 25mm hose to the grey water outlet.

This is what I have done and the bonus is each time the washing machine is used it flushes the grey water tank out due to the high flow rate.

And a hint for those that do have grey water tanks, tip a container of dishwasher cleaner down the sink into the grey water tank with the outlet closed and do a normal washup or shower the night before departure then the next day after you have run a few klms empty the grey water tank appropiatley  and it will be cleaned.

We have done this for over 2 years now without any problems.

We have the surge tank plumbed into the grey water tank, the surge tank is an extra safety device to ensure there is no overflow in the van. For example, we had a frog stuck up inside the 25mm hose, blocking it. If the grey water tank had have filled, without the surge tank, there would have been an over flow in the van.
