If they had any thought would be better to close the border north of the Murray River as people from Albury and Wodonga as do every other river town travel backwards and forwards constantly, often multiple times a day. Albury hospital now belongs to Victoria as do some other NSW hospitals on the border.
IMHO while fully appreciate the severity of the virus this is a Melbourne problem not a whole of state problem. Should have been regionalised like they did in Western Australia. Why runi the whole state economy for a city problem.

It is my understanding that border towns will still function as permits will be issued similar to what Queensland did in respect of their crossings.

I don't think anyone has egg on their face or faces ridicule as this is a new situation that has arisen and is being dealt with accordingly.

No one likes criticising politicians more than myself, but they have an enormous problem to deal with at the moment. I think the community would be much better served if some of the armchair experts and hysterical news reporters kept their ill informed opinions to themselves and allowed our elected people to do what they think is best based on their advice received.

Perhaps some of the armchair experts might like to inform us plebs as to which country in the World is presently handling this epidemic better than our leaders.

I tend to agree with you Monica we seem to be using a scatter gun approach rather than a rifle. I personally couldn't care less whether other states open up their borders to NSW that's something that they need to decide, our state economy may even benefit because we will be spending our money here rather than elsewhere.

Cheers

This is a National problem not just Melbourne, the only way to help fix this situation is to obey all directives whether you like them or not, this is not a TV Reality Show where you can misbehave badly and still win the prize.
They would not have made this decision if people stayed put, observed social distancing and followed personal hygiene requirements.
Now this may take off again because of these imbeciles and the paranoid anti testers. The States have the power under a Medical Emergency to compel people to take the swab and I feel they should take that stance.

We can be grateful that the water in the Murray River belongs to NSW, not the centre of the river. Just heard on ABC that there will be using drones to police the border. If Victorians even think of putting a toe in our water you will loose them!

Am I being cynical, is the current spike of COVID in Melbourne just after 2 weeks from the protests?

Very classy. Meanwhile, 2 people in Melbourne DIED from the virus in the last 24hrs.

No, you're not being cynical. While everyone else was being responsible 30,000 of these clowns got together compromising everyone's safety. Don't believe for a second that it wasn't a contributing factor or that they all went into self isolation. Many factors have been at play in the current dilemma but if we completely exonerate these protesters what the hell were we all doing being locked down and observing distancing for?

This is not just a Melbourne problem as there are 3 cases of covid in Albury/Wodonga now. There was also one in Bright last week if I remember correctly. Take care all.

There are cases in all states, the more you test the more you find. Watch out.

I may be wrong but I thought that Australia became one nation back in 1901 -  self governing colonies became a thing of the past. Isnt it time that we tried to support the Vics to get through this crisis rather than throw rocks at them.  I personally couldnt care less if states open or close their borders nor do I care who is the best premier there are people losing their lives because of this virus.

We can't even have the same road rules. One railway gauge. The same education. We argue over electricity. Let's not get onto water issues.

We are too busy pinching each others tourists, what hope is there for health.

It is surprising we don't have different currencies!

It's OK because the law doesn't apply and also you cannot catch C19 if you are protesting and virtue signalling for a Politically Correct cause.

It's going to be a total cluster f__k, the nobs in Sydney have no idea what effect this is going have on the many cross border communities that are numerous along the Murray river. When the NSW government opens the on line permit system the whole web site will crash. One of my son's needs to enter NSW to collect and deliver freight destined for smaller rural towns in Vic, many of this is food and daily staples, he's concerned that it may take 3 or 4 days to get a permit. Not all the crossings we like Albury/Wodonga, how does this effect small towns like Tooleybuc, Euston, Mulwala who have to shop in Vic, and then there are many other Vic towns that need to shop in the dominate NSW towns.

After my previous rant, I wonder how the poor buggers asigned to man the numerous high country crossings from Albury across the Great Divide to the east coast.

The reason is, a pandemic by nature is insidious and far powerful than humans can control despite best efforts that often come at enormous cost in other ways.

One of the biggest issues is those who are infected, but asymptomatic. They quite innocently go about their business unaware they're even infected and spreading the bug. They are everywhere, in every state. No one should be getting too cavalier, it will take mega testing blitzes to root out many more. We are one nation, no state is capable of existing as an island or set up to do so. The only borders are geopolitical lines drawn on a map, look at a satellite photo of Aus and notice the complete absence of borders..

Too true Mike. Thankfully the added benefits of protesting such as free shopping, burning other people's property and throwing rocks at the police has not taken off here yet.

I too support Kebbin's comments.

"This is a National problem not just Melbourne, the only way to help fix this situation is to obey all directives whether you like them or not, this is not a TV Reality Show where you can misbehave badly and still win the prize.

Even going as far as to say that any Southerners caravanning north at the moment could be considered to be somewhat selfish & irresponsible.  There are plenty of beautiful places to see within their own States, if indeed they are compelled to move about.  Installing a heater & staying put would be a much better choice.

I would add that the important thing is to minimise movement & the State's borders provide convenient demarcation boundaries and have the added advantage of defining health services responsibilities & structures.

We all aught to take a lesson from Dougwe.

What is happening in parts of Vic is a serious wake up call to all of us.  We are all in this together. Moving back to the previous restrictions may well be a prudent immediate move until the Vic outbreaks are under control, if that is possible.

BTW, we have cancelled our 2020 trip, taking the opportunity to address some lingering health issues while we have the chance.

Usual disclaimer, during this worldwide Coronavirus outbreak, I support ALL Australian borders closing, as a means of stopping/eradicating the Coronavirus, in our country

Before the Melbourne outbreak, I thought that we just about had it under control
Hopefully the enquiry, will tell us all, why the outbreak came from people who were already under quarantine

MY opinion, is still my original gut feeling from when the Coronavirus started, which is, we do not know enough about this virus, to stop it, so it will be better if we do not catch it

It is (another of my opinions), a fact of life, that a small irresponsible minority, will always spoil it, for the responsible majority

I read, that China had ring-fenced certain areas, and controlled the Coronavirus

I read, that other countries (Taiwan, New Zealand, etc) had very quickly made hard borders, and controlled the Coronavirus

I read, that some countries (USA, UK, Europe, South America, etc), had been a bit slow, to lock down, and we can all see what has happened

Hope that I have not gone off topic
