2006 Ford Transit Jumbo Lwb High Roof 5 Sp Manual Smart shift Van

Hi

2006 Ford Transit Jumbo Lwb High Roof 5 Sp Manual Smart shift Van

Used as a work vehicle.

Has intermittent mechanical issues with the automatic shift hence the lower price. Still drives. Engine is still in good condition.

I spoke to the owner Including the possibility of transmission failure. He said that when driving the gear would shift into a higher gear than it should he then puts it back neutral then into the right gear. Further that it could need a new transmission ($8,000) or just an oil pump renewal ($1,000) obviously a significant difference. I hope to buy it for $6,000)

According to car guide You could expect to pay $11,110 - $15,290 based on third party pricing data.

Any ideas or opinions please.

Cheers Michael

Michael,

Buying a vehicle with a known fault that could be major is fraught with problems.

How much does he want for this vehicle? You say you wish to buy for $6k, is that what he is looking for?

Unless you are a good mechanic, I would be avoiding something like this as It seems to me to be a recipe for expense and disaster, especially as you intend to travel in it.

Don't walk away, RUN.
A 14 year old vehicle with serious problems as described is a no brainer there are units out there with no major problems for $7K. Keep looking and you will end up getting a much better deal - Buying a dream is a certainty of buying a nightmare.

Hi Michael smile

As an exmechanic I would advise against it. Those 'semi auto' gearboxes can be a nightmare to get fixed in all brands when they start to play up. If you were a tinkerer and wanted to play and research the forums and the web then OK but if you have to pay to have it fixed, walk away now. Just get something working well.aww

PS I looked on Gumtree and the van I saw of that description was red and looked like it could be an ex Australia Post van with 281000 KMs. Hmmm I would think that was likely to have had a hard life and too many KMs for me to buy.

Peace of Mind when travelling is all part of having a great time exploring Australia.

Its "BIG"  and Beautiful.  Worrying whether something is going to breakdown is stressful.

If it breaks down in the middle of nowhere you could be stranded.

and $$$$$$$$$$ later

I would not touch it.
