As I remember from our 2009 Stirling, there are 2 things to do, (I think!).
There is a switch, similar to a power point without the plug input that needs to be turned on, and then on the stereo, you need to set the front and rear speaker balance.
How you do that will depend on the stereo, and if you dont have the books for it, you may need to Google it.
PS switch is probably in a cupboard.

Chaos, mayhem, confusion. Good my job here is done
Thanks Ian, yep we have a small white "light switch" in the cupboard alongside the stereo. We have user manual for the stereo, lots of mumbo jumbo. Will keep at it and hopefully stumble across answer.
Maybe during our travels I ask other vanners, we'll get it working one day
The newer Stereo digital radio with buttons having multi functions on each control are quite frankly SH!T - they cost a fortune and do not function properly in remote areas. We had similar problems with the four in cabin speakers - The manual is totally confusing and unable to be understood by rational adults. You are correct in that the balance control allows the switching between speakers the problem is that they can only be adjusted within the first 30 seconds of power to the unit.
To this day we cannot turn the unit completely OFF, we resort to removing the face of radio.
A friend of a friend got all of our quadraphonic speakers working (he didn't know how he did it) Best of luck - perhaps get a 13 year old teen that doesn't know sh!t from clay and ask them to show you how to adjust.

On our radio under mode we have bass, treble, balance and fader.
When you select fader we have volume levels to the Left and volume levels to the right. Left controls the outside speaker and right controls the inside speakers.
