Hand Santizer

Hand Sanitizer, look at the label, kills 99.5% of bacteria -------except Covid19 is a virus. Asking a doctor about this that person could not answer the question!

So what does hand sanitizer really do ?

 Hi smile

That is a clear and concise explanation thanks. I knew that washing hands in soap was effective if you washed them well and rubbed them together well for a while. I was working out on a Pacific island during a serious virus outbreak, and had WHO experts there telling everyone about washing hands properly and protecting everyone including us at the school. Simple enough really and a good habit in any circumstances.biggrin  People were actually prevented from entering the eating areas unless they washed hands first. Hmm nothing more than mum used to say really.aww But no profit in soap and water is there ??

I also knew that hand sanitiser was only useful for viruses if the alcohol is a high percentage. I went to a house inspection at the weekend and when leaving I looked at the specs on the hand sanitiser bottle supplied for all the people there to use. The agent was pissed off when I said it was not effective as it had no alcohol at all and was only designed for germs furious He did not listen and was just annoyed as he thought it complied with the recommendations. Hmm ignorance is bliss disbelief  Listen and learn !

Or make your own from methylated spirits mixed with 10 to 20% water.

One confusing item for me is what do they mean by "soap".

Do they mean a cake of soap made from animal or vegetable fats/oils or do they mean man-made synthetic detergents which I call "hand cleaners/wash"

Each cleans similarly but not the same.

Nowhere can I find reference to indicate that both are equally effective yet they are 'different'.

Good Luck.

They are saying over 50% . But then other additives may assist ?  In any case keeping clean and washing your hands is king !! Do B&B and keep things here clean. Multiple times a day . Hospital strength sanitiser also .

I've been using hand sanitiser for many moons now when out and about and the thing that annoys me as we speak is, it is very hard to find and when I do, what I paid $10 for a litre bottle is now around $20+.

I don't mind paying a couple of dollars more but double or more, come on, get real.

Mmmm, Iso must be getting to me cos I am grumpy.

Keep Safe out there.

I have a recipe for metho, glycerine and tea tree oil. Problem is, I can't find any of the later two. they might be on evilbay but delivery times to where I am can take 3 weeks, if I'm lucky.

Hi smile

I have never used hand sanitiser at our place. I put it on now mostly to pacify other people watching. At my chosen small supermarket there is a toilet block outside so i just go to the car and put the goods in the car, put the trolley in place and go in and wash my hands with the soap and water there. Floats my boat. I wash them again at home after putting the stuff away.

I have lived in a couple of third world countries and never used anything other than soap and water and common sense ?? Same with the food selection.biggrin And we generally drank the local water unless specifically advised not to. Any alcohol was applied internally in modest amounts. That seemed to work OK too. Gees we had Barbados rum at 78% available for US$9 at the shop on one island. You could use that straight for hand sanitiser. Hmm probably the safest way to use it furious

My silly opinions on hand sanitiser for what they are worth. Just do what your mum asked you to do years ago. aww

G'day All,
Are some of you seriously advocating the use of methylated spirits (methanol) in a hand sanitizer?
Perhaps you meant ethanol?
Cheers,
Roy.

Yes, I did. Am I wrong?

Yep, I reckon that's good advice.

methylated spirits is not methonol.  Methylated Spirits is a denatured ethanol product which contains a minimum of 95% ethanol and then additives to make it compliant with ATO and Poisons regulations

We bought some at a "Cheap Shop" in our local shopping centre yesterday.

Compared it with some I bought before this panic - both are "Designed in Australia" - but made in China!!

A friend of ours has an unusual "stuff" in his first aid kit - Turpentine!! Says it's good for most external health issues including bad cuts - glad it's for him & not me!

Neil, ours cost $5 for 490mL. Noticed Hardly Normal selling 3 small bottles for $12 or $4.95 each (with belt clips). I think the bottles held 50-60mL.

We have the glycerine and use eucalyptus oil, but here in Murgon we cannot buy Metho. Tried Kingaroy supermarkets and the big green shed as well. Have been told everyone buying to make hand sanitiser!!! Want to buy metho for another purpose, but cannot source it.
